Benefit set for son of local teacher, hospital worker

March 1, 2012

A fundraiser has been set for this Saturday at the St. Louis Besancon Hall, 155535 E. Lincoln Highway, near New Haven, from 5-10 p.m., for Eli Wellman, the three-year-old son of Kevin and Linda Wellman.
This event will include a a free-will donation meal, music, and a silent auction, among other activities.
According to a spokesman for the family, when Eli was eight days old, he was diagnosed with Aortic Co-artation and required emergency surgery. During a subsequent echocardiogram, it was discovered Eli had developed Aortic Stenosis and his Aortic Valve was not functioning properly.
On January 13 of this year, Eli underwent open heart surgery in Indianapolis.
Eli's mother is a teacher in the North Adams School District, while his father works for Lutheran Hospital in the emergency room and on the flight crew, as well as being employed by Adams Memorial Hospital.
To complicate matters, Kevin Wellman recently suffered a broken back and leg and was required to be off work for 10 weeks.
Family and friends are seeking donations for a silent auction, or for monetary donations, to help the family pay for the rising costs associated with Eli's illness.
An account has been set up for the family at the First Bank of Berne, Decatur east branch. Checks may be made payable to the First Bank of Berne-Wellman Family Benefit.
To donate, or for more information, contact (260) 437-9568 or (260) 701-0101.
