Benefit fund in place for crash family

May 3, 2012

A benefit fund for the Martin and Mary Schwartz family, who were involved in a fatal traffic accident on April 17, has been established at the First Bank of Berne, according to a spokesperson.
Mary Schwartz, 44, was directing a buggy eastbound on US 224 shortly before 8 a.m. when a van, driven by Chandler M. Gerber, 21, of Bluffton, failed to see the buggy, rear-ending the vehicle and ejecting all six passengers.
Two of the Schwartz's children, Enos, 3, and Barbara, 5, were killed that day while a third, Jerry, 17, passed away April 27 as a result of his injuries. Two other Schwartz children were treated at a Fort Wayne hospital and released.
Mary Schwartz is still undergoing treatment and faces an unforeseeable amount of rehabilitation, according to the spokesperson.
Those interested in making a donation to the Martin and Mary Benefit Fund may do so at a FBB location in Decatur, Berne, or Bluffton; or may contact Suzy Fuelling: (260) 724-9591.
