Bellmont wins a pair at Luers

March 21, 2012

FORT WAYNE–Bellmont picked up a pair of early season track wins over Bishop Luers Tuesday night at Luers Field with the Braves notching an 86-46 triumph over the Knights while the Squaws dealt their foes a 92-33 setback.
The win for the Braves was impressive considering the fact they went winless last season.
En route to the win, Bellmont swept all three relays along with eight of the other 13 events of the night. Willie Mahlan was a double individual winner for the Braves going :54.6 in the 400 dash and soaring 10'6 in the pole vault. He tallied a team high 11.25 points getting five points for each win and then joined Dallas Piotrowski, Logan Neher, and Sean Andrews to win the 4 x 400 relay in 3:47.
Braves head coach Dan Boocher said he was impressed with the efforts shown by his team noting "we had a great effort in the field, distance, relay, and sprints tonight." Boocher said there has been a considerable amount of improvement from last year and that "kids have been working really hard."
In addition to Mahlan's double win, Boocher said the fact Bellmont swept the three relays was a highlight.
Other individual first place finishes for the Braves were recorded by Noah Tinsley in the high jump at 5'4, Mason Schultz in the long jump at 17'2 1/2, Zac Torrey in the 100 dash in :12,2, Sean Andrews in the 800 run in 2:15, Evan Boucher in the  1,600 race  with a clocking of 5:06, and by Josh Porter in the 3,200 race with a 11:21.2 time.
The 4 x 100 and 4 x 800 relays also fell to Bellmont with Lance Shifferly, Schultz, Torrey, and Brad Sherry going :49.5 in the first event and Alex Diaz, Neher, Porter, and Andrews taking the 3,200 relay in 9:18.4.
The Braves earned seven second place finishes and nine thirds for team points. The only event that Bishop Luers swept was the 300 hurdles. "That's an event we're going to be working on in practice," Boocher added.
