MONROE—For one game, at least, the Bellmont/Adams Central volleyball rivalry was as intensely close as advertised, but the Squaws found another gear and put the match away in the next three games to defeat the Lady Jets, 3-1 on Saturday night.
The Hangar was packed in Monroe for the event but the play from both squads was a little shaky thanks in part to great serving from both sides. The teams were tied at 14-14 when AC made a mini-run to take the lead that eventually pushed to 24-21. Bellmont coach Craig Krull motivated his squad to make a push and they scored two more points to pull within one forcing a timeout from first-year coach Ashley Beard.
After the TO came an anti-climactic ending as the Squaws made a service error ending the drama of game one with a 25-23 score.
Coach Krull praised the play of AC after the first game, "AC won that first game because they served the ball well and exactly where they needed. We just couldn't pass the ball. Their service put us out of our rhythm."
Bellmont would respond in game two, however. The Squaws pulled a complete 180 and turned up the serving pressure themselves with several key aces, including five from sophomore Madalyn Mann.
"We put the pressure on with tougher serves and they didn't respond well, lucky for us," Krull noted.
After losing the first game, BHS made a clean sweep of the next three 25-13, 25-13, 25-11 to improve their record to a 3-0 mark, while dropping the Jets to 1-1 on the year.
