Bellmont topples county-rival DeKalb

RECORD-BREAKING RUN — Bellmont's Jay Watters broke Shannon Merriman's '96 school record for the 100-yard backstroke with a time of :57.97.

    The Bellmont girls swim team won all but two events Tuesday night at notched a 96-83 victory over NHC rival DeKalb in action at the Bellmont pool while in the boys meet, the Braves had a much easier time in slamming their Baron foes 141-37.
    Only the diving and 200 IM escaped the Bellmont girls' win column in the meet and Rachel Klingensmith and Erin Hunter both were double individual winners for the Squaws. Klingensmith swept the 50 and 100 freestyle races with respective times of :26.76 and 1:00.06 while Hunter posted wins in the 100 butterfly in 1:06.25 and the 100 backstroke with an effort of 1:08.54
    The boys meet went decidedly in Bellmont's favor with the Braves posting 1-2-3 finishes in four events, the 100 butterfly, 100 breaststroke, 200 IM, and 200 freestyle.
    Michael Miller, Zac Torrey, and Jay Watters all won two individual events for Bellmont. Watters broke the school record in the backstroke swimming :57.97. The old record was held by Shannon Merriman in 1996 with a time of :58.49. Miller copped the 200 IM in 2:08.90 and the 100 breaststroke in 1:07.92, Torrey earned first place status in the 100 and 200 freestyle races with times of :50.43 and 1:52.90, and Watters splashed his way past the 50 freestyle field in :22.52.
