Bellmont’s A.J. McCoy needs final ‘9’ to grab sectional pin crown

January 25, 2011

BHS BOWLERS IN FINALS — Bellmont's A.J. McCoy (far right) defeated the other three bowlers in this photo, including Bellmont's Justin Hamrick (far left), to win the Bluffton Boys Sectional Singles championship, by one pin. Eli Little and T.J. Tackett of Huntington also made it.

On the final roll of the sectional championship roll-off, Bellmont's A.J. McCoy knocked down nine pins and it was just enough as he successfully defended his individual singles sectional crown by beating Huntington North's E.J. Tackett 204-203.
It was a step-ladder playoff, so McCoy had to win three head-to-head matches after  a 629 (256, 193, 180) series to qualify fourth among the final four. It was held at the Bowling Center in Bluffton.
The Bellmonter defeated teammate Justin Hamrick (646 qualifier) 243-226. He then downed Huntington's Eli Little 218-158 to earn a shot at Tackett, who had rolled a spectacular 793 series to qualify first and wait for the final challenge.
McÇoy needed 19 pins in the 10th and final frame to top Tackett, and did it with a strike, and then the nine-pin ball.
Seven schools from the Hoosier Conference sent a total of 40 boys to go after the 2011 championship Saturday. South Adams, Jay, Huntington North, Southern Wells, Bluffton and Norwell sent their squads to go after the crown.
Eight bowlers from that tourney will advance to regional competition. Hamrick (185, 225, 236) and McCoy will be the only Bellmont representatives.
The rest of Bellmont's squad scores are as follows, Austin Tricker 491 series, Dan Gage 506, Josh Montgomery 530, Clint Saunders 542, and Trevor Saunders 543 series.
The Girls varsity Singles Sectional is Thursday, Jan. 27, in Portland.
The boys and girls varsity Team Sectionals are set for this Saturday in Huntington.
The eight from Bluffton's Sectional will compete in the Boys Singles Regional in Fort Wayne on Feb. 5th.
