FORT WAYNE—Bellmont assaulted Bishop Luers pitching for 14 hits including a pair of home runs Wednesday night and fashioned a 13-2 victory over the Knights at the Indiana Tech field in varsity baseball.
Matt Stidam and D. J. Wilder cleared the fence with home runs
for the Braves while Landon Baker kept his hot hitting going with a three-for-four performance including a double and five RBIs after getting three hits and six RBIs on Tuesday. Will Busse and Gunnar Cale both tripled while Brian Hakes cashed in a two-bagger.
Brandon Voglewede tossed a two-hitter for the Braves enroute to getting the pitching decision.
The Braves wasted no time in scoring as Gunnar Cale hit a one-out triple to deep left center and he scampered home on a single by Voglewede.
In the second, Bellmont made it 3-0 when Wilder, making his first plate appearance of the season after suffering a knee injury during football season, drove a fast ball over the right field fence onto Anthony Boulevard. Brooks Faurote single, Busse doubled and Faurote tallied on Cale's sacrifice fly to right.
Three more runs came Bellmont's way in both the third and fourth. Hakes walked to open the third frame and scored on Landon Baker's double. Stidam fouled off numerous pitches with one out before finally finding one he liked and deposited the ball over the left field fence and it was 6-0 for the Braves. In the fourth, Busse led off with a single and with two outs Hakes walked, Landon Baker singled in two runs, Ben Baker reached base on an error, Stidam walked and Wilder's grounder scored Baker.
Bellmont added four more in the fifth for a 13-0 edge as Busse tripled, Cale singled, Voglewede singled, Hakes walked, Landon Baker singled in two runs, and Joe Baker's grounder brought in the final marker.
Both of the Bishop Luers runs came on a Bellmont error in the bottom of the fifth.
"We are finally staying back and driving the ball," explained Bellmont coach Ben Fawbush, adding "our defense is improving. We just need to throw less pitches. Brandon pitched really well and everyone played a role in the victory."
The Braves, now 4-0 on the season, return to action tonight at home against South Side in a 5 p.m. tilt.
