Bellmont pink prom has a special guest

May 14, 2012

Bellmont High School held a pink prom at the Botanical Gardens in Fort Wayne on Saturday night — with a special guest.
In honor of a classmate's mother who is fighting breast cancer, numerous students were sporting pink, the boys wearing pink vests and, in some cases, pink ties.
Katie Gross Birch, mother of senior Isaac Birch, learned she had breast cancer several weeks ago and recently underwent surgery. Senior Cody Walters, a member of the football team like Isaac Birch and several other seniors, began a campaign to raise funds to assist the family and to hold a "pink vest" night at the prom.    The fund has raised over $5,000 in a short time.
Then Saturday's prom was highlighted when Katie Birch — 11 days after surgery! — and family members appeared at the prom.
Katie, husband Matt and children Isaac, Maverick and Gabriella are rural Decatur residents.
