Bellmont dominates county meet with AC
MONROE – The Bellmont girls’ and boys’ swimming and diving teams swept Adams Central on Thursday, but Jets coaches Patti Sauer and Lana Shoaf received a celebratory push in the pool anyway.
The reason for the celebration – continuing improvement from their swimmers. After sweeping Wabash on Tuesday, the Adams Central swimmers begged to see their coaches take a dip. They were safe on Tuesday, but not so on Thursday.
The Bellmont girls swept every event to win, 131-48. The boys’ meet was closer, with Bellmont coming out on top, 105-78.
Adams Central’s evening was highlighted by two wins - Gavin Kaehr in the 200 IM and Travis Bebout in the 500 freestyle. Also, Shane Gremaux’s third-place finish in the 500 freestyle was a 10-second improvement on his previous best time, according to Adams Central’s coaches.
The Jets’ boys’ team began the meet with a solid 200 medley relay. The first and second legs of the race were close, but Kaehr pulled ahead in the third leg to give the Jets enough leeway to win the race.
Just the opposite happened in the 200 freestyle relay, where Adams Central began with an easy lead, but Bellmont’s Spencer Zeser’s second leg of the race put Bellmont in the lead for the win.
Such a close meet throughout, the turning point of the boys’ contest was the 100 butterfly where Bellmont’s Trey Schisler won and Thomas McNamara was fourth, to give the Braves a cushion in points. McNamara finished the meet with three personal best times.
On the girls’ side, Mae Baczynski and Reagan Burry both had three personal best swims.
Up next, Bellmont travels to East Noble on Tuesday, and Adams Central will host Bishop Dwenger on Tuesday.
