PORTLAND—Members of the 2011-12 Bellmont boys swim team weren't alive the last time a sectional trophy made its way to the BHS awards case but a spectacular performance in the pool Saturday by the Braves resulted in seven first place finishes and a sectional championship.

Success for the Braves amounted to a 95-point victory as Bellmont rolled up 399 points to the 304 for second place Delta. Jay County was third with 300 followed by Muncie Central 291, Norwell 205, Bluffton 200, Adams Central 198, South Adams 134, Blackford 94, and Muncie South 32.
The last time the Bellmont boys captured the sectional hardware was 1980.
Seniors Jay Watters and Michael Miller both starred for the Braves of Coach Drew Norby with two individual titles and both participated on the winning 200 and 400 freestyle relay teams as well. Zac Torrey was right behind with one individual win and two relay splits. Both of the victories in the relays for Bellmont resulted in new school records as well.
Norby, who was voted "Coach of the Year" for the second straight year in a vote of sectional coaches, emphasized Bellmont "swam really well Saturday." He had predicted several weeks ago that "if" the Braves swam to their capabilities, he thought they would be strong favorites.
