New Haven scored 20 points against Bellmont on Thursday night...in the match.
The Squaws, playing without the services of one of their better strikers, blew the Lady Bulldogs out of the building with a three-set sweep 25-11, 25-1, 25-8.
No, that's not typo, New Haven managed just one point in game two.
Janaya Wilder missed Thursday's contest for personal reasons, but the Squaws did not require her skills against New Haven. The Bellmont reserves played most of the contest including set two when the home team managed to rotate only twice during the entire game.
Bellmont, ranked number two in 3A in this week's coaches poll, remained focused despite playing New Haven, one of the NHC's weaker teams.
"I was very impressed with our mental focus throughout," praised Bellmont coach Craig Krull. "They scored a few points in the beginning on a missed serve here and some bad passing there but with that second game we really played great."
After 2-2 in game one, Bellmont scored five straight behind the serving of Madalyn Mann to go up 7-2. Bellmont would keep pace with New Haven on some unforced errors until 14-8. The Squaws got a boost from senior Audrey Schultz who played dominant at the net. Schultz put down blocks on back-to-back plays and nearly had a third block in a row but the ball skipped to the left for a side out. At that point, Bellmont had locked up a 16-8 cushion and did not look back scoring nine of the final 12 points.
Schultz moved into the starting lineup as part of coach Krull's recent lineup shake resulting in more height in the front line and moving Sadie Alberson to the back for better dig support.
"We have a better set up moving Sadie to the back row with Audrey in the front," noted Krull. "Tonight was a good time to test out some rotations against a struggling team."
