Bed bugs dominate Geneva meeting

March 5, 2014

Adams County Sanitarian and Environmental Director Terry Smith, along with Health Board Attorney Adam Miller, appeared before Geneva Town Council Tuesday evening to address lingering concerns associated with the infestation of bed bugs reported at Geneva Shores Apartments by area residents.
Miller informed the board the health department is limited in what it can do to address the reported bed bug infestation. He quoted both the national Center for Disease Control and the Indiana Department of Health as stating that while bed bugs are indeed a concern and their bites can be both painful and annoying, both agencies have determined that bed bugs do not transfer disease and therefore are not considered to be a health hazard.
“Realistically, there is nothing the (county) health department can do, because they (bed bugs) are not spreading disease,” Miller stated. “What it comes down to is that it’s a civil action, which I believe has already happened,” he added. Geneva residents Donna Butler and Calvin Hofstetter acknowledged they do indeed have a civil suit pending.
