INDIANAPOLIS — Todd Batt made history for South Adams, becoming the first Starfire wrestler to compete under the lights at the IHSAA State Wrestling Finals Saturday night at Bankers Life Fieldhouse, and Bellmont continued its storied tradition with state placers Ben Baker, Brooks Faurote and Brad Busse.
Frosh Sawyer Miller also had a very successful debut for the Stars, earning fourth place at 106 pounds for coach Eric Myers.
Seniors Faurote (145) and Baker (195) both finished fourth, losing to eventual state champs in the semi-finals, and junior Brad Busse earned seventh, pinning Corey Crabtree of Muncie South for the third time this postseason in his final match of the night at 182.
On Friday night, Bellmont lost Bobby Keuneke at 120 on a late fall after he built a 10-6 lead, and L.J. Moser was eliminated at 113 pounds for the Starfires. Adams Central's Chantz Luginbill lost to eventual state champ Brian Harvey of Cathedral 18-6 at 160 pounds.
Batt escaped with just 4.4 seconds left to take out Luke Blanton of Alexandria 3-2 in the semi-final match which propelled him into the finals against two-time Perry Meridian champ Jared McKinley, a 9-2 winner in that 132-pound title match.
"He couldn't ask for a better day, walking out of here with a second," said SA coach Eric Myers.
