ATVs may soon be permitted on Berne thoroughfares

February 26, 2014

A proposed ordinance may soon allow all terrain vehicles and utility vehicles to operate on Berne roadways along the same scope of golf carts.
Under the proposed amendment to the golf cart ordinance currently in place in Berne, ATV and UTV riders at least 18-years-old would be allowed to drive on Berne city and rural streets with the same regulations as golf carts.
All vehicles would be required to register with the Department of Motor Vehicles, as well as with the Berne Police Department. The only fees involved in the registration are those required by the state statute, according to City Attorney Dave Baumgartner.
