State Rep. Jeff Espich

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) — Longtime Republican state Rep. Jeff Espich says he won’t seek re-election this year and will end his 40-year career in the Indiana House.
The Uniondale Republican has steered fiscal matters for the House Republicans’ caucus for decades and currently chairs the House Ways and Means Committee.
The Journal Gazette reports (http://bit.ly/yLNhsL) that Espich had said for months that he intended to run for re-election.
But he sent a letter to the Journal Gazette early Friday saying he had decided against running in the newly-drawn House District 50 seat against incumbent Republican Rep. Dan Leonard of Huntington. Friday is the filing deadline for Indiana’s legislative candidates.
In his letter, Espich said he’s ‘‘worked hard and tried to lead well’’ during his time in the House and hopes he’s succeeded.
