Area wrestling fans beware, Saturday's Jay County Wrestling Sectional could come down to the last takedown.
It could be that close.
"It's wide open, and I know that going in," stated Bellmont coach Brent Faurote, who will try to coach his Braves to a 22nd straight sectional crown.
Though it will be a three-team race, with ACAC champ Adams Central and last year's sectional runner-up South Adams fighting for positions, it looks on paper like it could come down to the Braves and Jets.
"I look for whoever comes out of it, it's going to be five or six points, figuring things on paper. Tournament-wise, it's going to be tough. I told the kids we need to step up and wrestle well," said Faurote, who will have four Bellmonters seeded No. 1 to the two seeds of Adams Central, and three for South Adams
Two of the Central No. 1 seeds, Cody Walburn at 120 and Zeke Schultz at 152, are former state streeters, and lost one-point upsets to Bobby Keuneke and Dewey Melcher in the dual meets. Walburn is 34-1.
And one of Bellmont's second seed is Mishawaka and NHC champ Brad Busse (31-2) at 182, who lost a 4-3 decision to AC's Ben Pfister (33-2).
"Bellmont has a 60-40 advantage, but if we turn around some of those one-point losses, and things do our way in four or five swing matches, we can win by a narrow margin," said Adams Central coach Doug Schultz.
The winner of the Jay County Sectional, team-wise, will visit Central on Wednesday for the annual and last AC Team Regional. A spot at Team State is on the line. The likely foe will be Yorktown, a one-point winner over Bellmont in November.
Faurote feels that the winner at Jay County should win the regional and advance to state.
"To beat AC (in the dual), we won a lot of close ones, beat Walburn by one, caught Schultz and beat him by one. Obviously, we get those seeds because of that head-to-head competition. But we lost a tough one to Pfister and that one we could turn around.
The top four in each class advance to the Jay County Individual Regional set for a week from Saturday.
