One of Decatur's most famous native sons, David Anspaugh, may be returning here for the city's 175th birthday celebration in August.
Larry Isch, co-chairman of the committee organizing the celebration, said at Tuesday night's Decatur City Council meeting that "if nothing gets in the way" the director of "Hoosiers" and "Rudy" will visit the city for the celebration.
Among activities being planned, Isch said, are showings of those two films at Bellmont High School. It is anticipated that a reception for Anspaugh will be held, along with an autograph session.
Isch also noted that the committee's website has drawn a huge amount of attention, and from numerous other states. "We've gotten comments from all over," he told council and Mayor John Schultz.
The website — — features a schedule of events, a short history of the city, old photos, a page on which to shop for 175th anniversary souvenirs, and a "contact us" page so people can offer comments.
The committee also has a FaceBook page that is updated often: "Decatur 175."
The mayor said this week is the final opportunity for groups and organizations to have their corresponding events listed in an activities booklet which will be prepared. Anyone who wants to add something should contact him at City Hall or Isch (724-7429) or the other co-chairman, Max Miller (223-0102).
The celebration will be held August 26-28, in conjunction with the annual Kekionga Festival.
