Alfred W. Schott, 83, of Rockford, Ohio, died at 8:24 a.m. Tuesday in Inpatient Hospice Center at Van Wert, Ohio. He was ill only a short time, following an accident at home on January 7, 2011.
He was born on August 28, 1927, in Mercer County, Ohio, to Frederick W. and Wilhelmina Emerick Schott.
He married Barbara L. Mathews on March 19, 1946, in Chattanooga, Ohio; she survives.
He was a carpenter and also worked for International Harvester in Fort Wayne as a troubleshooter for new truck production.
He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church at Schumm, Ohio.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army in Europe.
Other survivors are three sons, Alan Schott (and wife Dianne) of Willshire, Ohio; Barry Schott of Atlanta, Georgia; and Kelly Schott of Ohio City, Ohio; two daughters, Mrs. Steve (Sharon) Murphy of Blytheville, Arkansas, and Traci Schott of Fort Wayne; one sister, Irene Herron of St. Henry, Ohio; two brothers, Paul Schott (and wife June) of New Bremen, Ohio, and Dale Schott (and wife Mary) of Fort Wayne; two grandsons, Cory Davies (and wife Sarah) and Collin Davies; one granddaughter, Mrs. Joe (Alison) Bender; and one great-grandson, Dokken Davies.
He was preceded in death by three sisters, Anna Lee Schlechte, Ruth Edwards, and Leah Smith. Four brothers are also deceased, Clarence, Glenn, Mike, and Ray Schott.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in Zion Lutheran Church at Schumm, with Pastor Jeff Patterson officiating.
Burial will be in Zion Lutheran Cemetery at Schumm, with military graveside honors by Homer Pierson Post 207 of the American Legion.
Visiting hours are 2-4 and 5-8 p.m. Friday in Zwick and Jahn Funeral Home, Decatur, and 9-10 a.m. Saturday in the church.
Preferred memorials are to Zion Lutheran Church at Schumm, to Concordia Lutheran Seminary in Fort Wayne, or to the donor's choice.
