The 2013 Adams County Ag Extravaganza was held at the Mirage on Thursday night. It was a joint annual meeting of the Adams County's Farm Bureau, Pork Producers, and Soil and Water Conservation Department.
After a meal, comedian Jay Hendren entertained the crowd, and then it was down to business.
Fred Kunkel, president of the Adams County Farm Bureau, gave highlights from its 2012 year, including pictures from the Open Class Flower and Vegetable Show at the Kekionga Festival and the 4-H Fair. He also talked about the bureau's donation to the new 4-H Expo Hall, and reminded his audience of the programs the bureau sponsors, as well as the fact that it awards scholarships to high school students.
Kunkel also talked about all the work that Chris Steel is doing as chairman of the Farm Bureau's Young Farmers program.
The Farm Bureau then elected Craig Fruechte as vice-president, Mindy Fruechte as secretary, and Justin Hummel and Chris Steele as delegates to the 2013 State Convention.
Stanley Fuhrmann, president of the Adams County Pork Producers, gave highlights from their 2012 year. He reported that Travis Bluhm won the 2012 Pork Producer Scholarship.
He showed pictures from the Pork Producer Supper at the 4-H Fair. He also reported that the Pork Producers had donated to the 4-H Expo Hall benefit auction and reminded his audience of the programs the Producers sponsor.
Ryan Noblitt, Soil and Water Conservation Department county conservationist, gave the SWCD's 2012 report. He reported that cover crops are becoming more popular with farmers in the county. He also showed pictures, including the department's booth at the 4-H Fair, a cover crop display trailer, and the August 2012 Field Day.
He commended Kelli Fuhrmann for her youth education programs and Mike Werling for his work with the St. Mary's Watershed. Werling was also recognized as a River Friendly Farmer. Kait Kelsey's Splash Day T-shirt design was displayed.
Alex Steiner was appointed and Jeff Kiess was elected as supervisors for the Adams County SWCD. Rick Steiner, Steve Huser, and Gene Witte were recognized for their years of service given to the SWCD.
