MONROE—The Adams Central girls basketball team learned the hard way Tuesday night in a 44-38 setback to Lakewood Park that a period in varsity action lasts an entire eight minutes, not 7:57.
Adams Central went to the charity stripe with just three seconds remaining in the third stanza in its non-conference battle at the Hangar trailing 26-25 but missed both ends.  Thinking the quarter would soon be over, the Jets did not contest a rebound by Kelsey Kruse and Kruse alertly fired a floor-length pass to Rae Faur who just beat the buzzer with a lay-up.
Faur opened round four with a trey for what had been the largest lead of the game to that point at 31-28 but AC senior guard Alyssa Keller nailed two straight buckets to bring the Jets back.
Both teams had chances to do some serious damage offensively from the foul line but both failed miserably. After finishing the first half 7-10 from the line, the Jets were a paltry 2-10 in the final half while Lakewood cracked the rim on numerous occasions and finished 11-29--that coming from a team that hit over 50 percent from the field on 15-29.
The junior varsity game was close but Lakewood Park managed to hold on for a 40-38 triumph.
