AC, Commodores take MS county tourney
MONROE—An Adams Central and St. Joseph team were crowned county champs over the weekend at the Hangar during the annual middle school tournament between the four schools Bellmont, AC, South Adams, and the Commodores.
At the eighth grade level, St. Joe's came away with the trophy after knocking off the Squaws in game one, then besting South Adams in the final.
Against Bellmont, St. Joe earned a 25-10, 25-21 victory to advance to the championship. Later against the Stars, the Commodores won 25-14, 25-14 improving to 14-1 on the season preparing for the CYO that began last night.
Taylor Bebout led the Coms with six aces, while Maddie Strickler had five andMadison Macklin and Morgan Ellsworth each served up two winners. Bebout had a good day leading in kills as well with 15 for St. Joe, while Lynae McDonald had eight, Ellsworth had five, and Liza Okoniewski had four. Bebout and McDonald each had 12 assists in the two matches, while Okoniewski led with seven digs and Ellsworth and Bebout had six each.
For South Adams, their trip to the finals started with a third win over AC this season 25-11, 25-18. No individual stats were provided for the Stars or Squaws.
For AC, Jenna Lehman had five kills, one ace, and five assists. Haley Stinson and Kayla Bahrke each had three kills, while Emily Bluhm added two aces.
On the seventh grade side of the tournament, it was the Lady Jets emerging with a county crown winning over South Adams 25-21, 25-23 in a tight match, followed by a win in the championship over Bellmont 25-19, 25-19.
Adams Central rallied back against South Adams after being down 18-10 in the first set. AC would take control in the second set earning a tight victory and with the win against Bellmont, the Lady Jets are now 17-1 on the season.
Sami Oliver led the Jets with 13 kills, six aces, and six assists. Meredith Quinones and Sarah Liter each had four aces on the day.
Bellmont earned a trip to the finals with a win against St. Joe, 25-16, 21-25, 15-7 in the only match to go to three sets on the day.
