9 seeking title of ambassador

    Nine longtime members of Adams County 4-H are seeking the title of Royal Ambassador at the county 4-H Fair, which opens Sunday at the Monroe fairgrounds. The winner will be announced after the parade on Tuesday night.
    The nine are: Marissa Scheumann, Megan Hreha, Audra Franz, Devan Barger, Hannah Conrad, Paul Mesing, Zan Smith, Macy Mudd, and Casey Krueckeberg. Following are sketches of each candidate:
    • Devan Barger is the daughter of Bob and Donna Barger and will be a junior at Adams Central High School.
    She has been in 4-H since kindergarten and has been active in the swine, dog, veterinary science, animal posters, foods, and photography divisions, winning numerous awards, including grand championships.
    Devan is vice president of the Adams County 4-H Junior Leaders and was a longtime member of the Lucky Lonestars 4-H Club.
    At AC, she is a varsity cheerleader, wrestling manager, and member of the Swing Choir, FFA, and Campus Life. She is on the missions academic board at AC, the executive council of Sunshine Society, and the Substance Abuse Awareness Council.
    She teaches clog dancing, was an intern at Smith's Veterinary Hospital at Berne, and plans to get a college degree in veterinary science.
    • Hannah Conrad is the daughter of Tony and Lori Conrad and graduated this year from Bellmont High School, where she was in the National Honor Society and FFA.
    She has been in 4-H for 10 years, including being a Mini 4-H queen, and is a four-year member of the county 4-H Dog Club.
    Hannah will attend the University of St. Francis in Fort Wayne to major in nursing.
    She works at Decatur Dance Academy as an instructor and at The Village of Heritage nursing home in Monroeville as a resident assistant doing certified nursing assistant duties.
    • Audra Franz is the daughter of Allen and Sandy Franz and a 10-year member of the Union Working Pals 4-H Club, serving as president this year.
    She has been involved in sewing, fashion revue, collections, crafts, floriculture, foods, gardening, genealogy, and gift wrapping divisions and created many poster board projects.
    Audra was the salutatorian of the Class of 2011 at Heritage High School and will attend Purdue University to major in mathematics education and horticulture science.
    She is a four-year FFA member and led her team to a first-place finish in horticulture at a national FFA contest. This fall, she will compete in a national FFA nursery landscaping contest.
    • Colton Fuelling is the son of Paul and Diana Fuelling and a 10-year member of the Root Roving Rangers 4-H Club, having twice served as president and vice-president.
    He has been in the 4-H Rabbit Club since 2002, has been a 4-H Junior Leader since 2006, and has been in the 4-H Shooting Sports Club since 2008.
    Colton was co-salutatorian this year at Bellmont High School and will attend the Indiana-Purdue campus in Fort Wayne to study mechanical engineering. At BHS, he was a class representative; a member of FFA, the Substance Abuse Awareness Council, and the jazz band; and made the National Honor Society. He is the only BHS graduate to receive an academic honors diploma and a technical honors diploma.
    He has amassed more than 200 hours of community service.
    • Megan Hreha is the daughter of Steve and Susie Hreha and will be a junior this year at South Adams High School.
    She has been in the Wabash Cloverleaf 4-H Club for eight years, involved in such projects as home environment and personality. She has won seven grand champion and two reserve grand champion awards in 4-H.
    At SAHS, Megan is on the tennis team, a cappella choir, jazz band, pep band, and concert band; and is an assistant drum major on the high school marching band. She plays violin, clarinet, and keyboards.
    She also has performed in high school musicals and plays.
    • Casey Krueckeberg is the son of Barry and Edie Krueckeberg and will be a junior at Bellmont High School.
    He is an eight-year member of the Preble Trailblazers 4-H Club, serving as vice-president this year, and is involved in the 4-H Horse and Pony Club, poultry projects, and starter calves. He has won several grand championships and reserve grand championships.
    Casey is president of the BHS chapter of FFA, a District Six FFA officer, and a participant in the 4-H Roundup.
    He has been an officer of the horse and pony club and the poultry club.
    • Paul Mesing is the son of Wally and Carla Mesing and is a 10-year member of 4-H, now serving as president of the Preble Trailblazers 4-H Club.
    He is a six-year member of Junior Leaders. of which he is president, and received a state FFA degree last year. At BHS, he was a member of the National Honor Society.
    Paul is active in tractors, model-building, starter calves, and bicycles and was the 2010 state and national champion in the FFA senior lawn and garden tractor division. He also won the 2006 state lawn and garden tractor junior division title.
    He graduated this year from Bellmont High School and will attend the University of Northwestern Ohio this year to major in agricultural mechanics. He works for Nussbaum Mechanical and Borne Farms.
    • Macy Mudd is the daughter of Stephen and Judy Mudd and a nine-year member of 4-H, involved in photography, Junior Leader, goats, starter calf, beef, and dairy projects.
    She has won premier, intermediate, and junior dairy showmanship awards in 4-H and has competed with her animals at the Indiana State Fair and at national events. She won the intermediate showmanship award at the All-American National Dairy Show and the junior championship for Ayrshires.
    Macy is the reigning Indiana Milking Shorthorn Queen and will compete this fall in the national FFA dairy-judging contest.
    She will be a senior at Adams Central High School, where she is in Sunshine Society, on the track team, and is active in FFA.
    She was an intern at Swiss City Vet Clinic in Berne and works on her family's dairy farm and at Bella Vista Jerseys.
    • Marissa Scheumann is the daughter of Darren and Trisha Scheumann and is a 10-year member of 4-H.
    She has been in the 4-H Dog Club for 10 years, is a drill team captain, and won two grand championships at the 4-H Fair's dog show. She also won a 2010 grand championship at the state dog show.
    Marissa is a 2011 graduate of Bellmont High School, where she was in FFA for three years, and will enter the Indiana-Purdue campus at Fort Wayne to study veterinary science.
    She has worked at Fairway Deli in Decatur for for 2.5 years.
    • Suzanne "Zan" Smith is the daughter of Mark Smith and Vicki Baumer Smith and is a 2011 graduate of Adams Central High School. She has been in 4-H for 10 years and is president of the Blue Creek Up and At It 4-H Club.
    Zan has won grand championships in goats, collections, sewing, and fashion revue, plus special awards at the Indiana State Fair in sewing and fashion revue. She represented Indiana 4-H on a Citizenship Washington Focus trip to Washington, D.C.
    At AC, she was president of the Sunshine Society, secretary of the student council, class secretary for four years, a member of the Swing Choir and the Girls' Sextet, cheerleading captain, and a member of the swimming team (captain, most valuable swimmer, and mental attitude award winner).
    She is a four-year member of the Substance Abuse Awareness Council, works at The Palmer House restaurant in Berne, and is a lifeguard at the Berne swimming pool.
    Smith will attend the Xavier University in Cincinnati to major in communications.
