Adams Wells Crisis Center (AWCC) officials have announced that their recent event, "Cooking for a Cause," raised more than $7,000 for the shelter. Of that $7,000, the live auction raised $3,900.
Josh Krueckeberg donated his auctioneering services and Rick Teboe donated the DJ service, according to shelter officials. City police officer Jim Franze won the honor of having the best food dish while Deputy Sheriff Dan Mawhorr won for most creative dish and Jim Verrone won for having the best decorated table.
Local and state law enforcement officers auctioned off an hour of their time to provide community service to the highest bidder. Adams County Deputy Coroner Leslie Cook and Adams County Prosecutor Chris Harvey also auctioned off an hour of their time.
At the event, AWCC Executive Director Angie Gunsett spoke to the group about how important the shelter is to Adams County. She noted that last year the shelter served more than 150 clients and that those numbers are expected to be even higher this year.
She also explained the services provided to each client at the shelter and how domestic violence affects innocent children.
Gunsett concluded her speech by playing a real 911 call placed by a six-year-old girl who tried to get police to come to her house because her stepfather was beating her mother and baby brother.
Franze also gave a speech during which he thanked the AWCC staff for its hard work and for making an impact in the community.
