Fourteen candidates seeking election to municipal offices in Berne and Decatur had their four minutes of fame Thursday evening during a Meet The Candidates event in Berne.
The forum, sponsored by the Decatur and Berne Rotary Clubs and broadcast live over radio station WZBD, was held at Swiss Village retirement community in Berne.
Candidates used their alloted four minutes of air time to outline their candidacies for six contested races in Berne and one in Decatur.
Taking part in the event were Berne mayoral candidates Bill McKean, a Republican, and Democrat Ray Gill. Each is hoping to succeed two-term Mayor John Minch, a Democrat who has elected not to run for another term.
Seeking spots on the Berne City Council and sharing their views with those in attendance as well as the listening radio audience were Democrat Matt Rupp and Republican Curtis Wurster, candidates for the District 1 council seat; Republican Gregg Sprunger and Democrat Kim Kelsey, seeking the District 2 council seat; Democrat Rod Mosser and Republican Mark Wynn, candidates for the District 3 seat; and Democrat Ron Dull and Republican David Burson, both of whom are seeking election to the city council from District 4.
Democrat Mike Poulson, a candidate for the at-large seat on Berne City Council, was unable to attend due to a death in the family. His statement was read by Berne Democratic Party Chairman Kyle Velasco. Republican Philip Provost, the Republican hopeful for the at-large council seat, took part in the event.
Also addressing the crowd were two candidates for the at-large seat on Decatur City Council: Democrat Barb Engle and Republican Cameron Collier.
