South Adams Schools' Superintendent Scott Litwiller gave an update on the Crossing alternative school at this week's board of education meeting.
Litwiller reported that as of Nov. 8, the Crossing had 23 students. It started the second quarter with 25 students, but two students withdrew recently — one student who is 18 years old dropped out, and another student is moving to Florida. Of the current 23 students, 19 live within the school's district, and of those 19, Litwiller said that 12 would probably not be able to attend school in a formal school setting if the Crossing weren't available to them.
It was also noted that the Crossing is working to receive full approval from the Department of Education (DOE). As part of the approval process, a DOE representative recently conducted a site visit at the Crossing. Litwiller said the visit went well, and after the fire marshal gives his okay, the Crossing should be fully approved by the end of December.
The Crossing Community Board will hold its first official meeting in December. The Crossing will also host a "Spotlight Breakfast" at Alpine Rose Coffee Shoppe in Berne at 7:30 a.m. next Monday, Nov. 19. The public is invited to attend.
In other business at the meeting, Technology Director Myra Moore reported that in January, Apple Inc. will present a free, two-day work session on the use of iPads as educational tools for up to 12 representatives from South Adams. Moore said a representative from each grade level, the superintendent and two school board members are planning to attend.
The purpose of the work session, said Moore, is to learn more about iPads versus laptops, and to decide before the next school year which would be more beneficial for use in the classroom.
In personnel matters, board members accepted the resignations of Jason Arnold as the head football coach; Steve Dellinger as the boys' soccer coach; and Ashley Fosnaugh as the junior varsity volleyball coach. The board also approved Roger Teeter as a volunteer middle school boys' basketball coach.
Food Service Director Diane Wingler suggested that the board approve one rate for substitute workers in the kitchen and cafeteria. Litwiller explained that there are currently two rates — $8.22 and $9.17, and that the different rates are to reflect the different tasks assigned. However, according to Wingler, all of the substitute workers help with all of the tasks, so she believes they should all be paid the same rate.
The recommendation to make the rate $9.17 across the board was approved unanimously.
