INDIANAPOLIS — "Alexis definitely had the perfect race at the perfect time — at the state meet when everyone is that fast and it's all on the line. It was a tremendous performance to come away with fourth place as a sophomore," stated Bellmont track coach Carl Risch after Bellmont's Alexis Harvey earned her medal as the fourth fastest girls 200 meter runner in the state Saturday at the Indiana University Track and Field Complex.
HUNTINGTON—The Bellmont boys golf team played well enough Saturday to see another day as they finished third out of 12 teams in the IHSAA golf sectional at the LaFontaine Golf Course and will advance to the regional on Thursday to be held at The Player's Club Golf Course in Muncie at 8 a.m.
Bellmont's hitters just couldn't get a good figure out Western pitcher Katie Daine as the senior hurler changed speeds and moved the ball around, limiting the Squaws to two hits in a 4-1 regional victory Tuesday night at the BHS field.
"I thought we played a really good defensive game. Our hits didn't come through, but all you can think about is how hard you played," said Bellmont senior catcher Dana Kaczmarek, one of three Bellmonters who played their last game Tuesday night.
Several games were played recently in youth league baseball with the Whitko Wildcats and the Decatur Braves splitting a doubleheader while Courtesy Motors easily sped past the Bluffton Parks and Recreation team.
OSSIAN—If Bellmont softball player Brieann Burkhalter was a cat, it would be safe to assume she used up many of her nine lives Saturday afternoon as the Bellmont Squaws rallied to capture the IHSAA sectional 22 in class 3A play at Norwell High School over the Peru Tigers by a 7-3 score in 10 innings.
The victory for the defending Norwell sectional champions means the Squaws will host Western High School in the IHSAA regional tonight at the BHS diamond.
FORT WAYNE—"We're the defending champs of this sectional until someone knocks us off," related Adams Central baseball coach Dave Neuenschwander and that statement proved true as the Jets pounded out a 5-1 win over Woodlan in the championship encounter of the IHSAA class 2A sectional final at Indiana Tech Monday evening.
Though the time that the Bellmont girls 1600 relay team ran would have won three other regionals, the record-setting BHS foursome will not be competing at the June 4 IHSAA State Girls Track and Field meet.
Bellmont coach Carl Risch learned Wednesday afternoon that the squad fell two places short of making the field. It's the same case with freshman hurdler Holly Hankenson. She fell two places short of making the state field in the 300 sticks.
