Squaws stop Knights

August 31, 2011

A tight defensive battle was broken by a great offensive play by the Bellmont in the second half and the Squaws captured a 1-0 win over Norwell in Northeast Hoosier Conference girls soccer to remain unbeaten on the season.
The 5-0 Squaws had a decided ball possession edge in the first half but Norwell's defense focused on keeping the offensive combination of Taylor Kennedy, Sarah Gerke, and Madison Gephart quiet by keeping five players back and most of the time were double teaming the BHS forwards.

In a hotly contested county match Tuesday, the Bellmont varsity boys tennis team beat Adams Central 3-2 to remain unbeaten at 5-0.         Senior Payton Selking lost to Nathan Barger 1-6, 4-6 at number one singles.  This was only Selking’s second lost this year including invitationals dropping his record is 6-2.
Phil Bauman, now 7-1, beat Conner Lengerich 6-1, 6-2 while Nick Faurote, who just recently won a spot on varsity, lost to Jacob Weil 2-6, 2-6.

August 30, 2011

South Adams football coach Jason Arnold was one of 10 high school coaches nominated for the weekly Colts/NFL Coach of the Week program sponsored by Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield.
Arnold, whose Starfires knocked off Bellmont 13-10 last Friday, was nominated in region three. Floyd McWhirt of Wabash High School was named Coach of the Week after leading the Apaches to its second straight win of the season in his first year at the helm.

Rout at Union County gives Jets 94-40 scoring edge

August 29, 2011

Two games into the 2011 season, Adams Central has outscored Blackford and Union County 94 to 40, while AC's next opponent, Leo, has outscored Norwell and Angola 84-18.
However, the key difference, as Flying Jet head coach Michael Mosser pointed out after last Friday's game at UC, is that Central has beaten two teams that are not too good, while Leo has knocked off two schools that generally field pretty good teams.

Hop's Heresy: Wanner was the real key

August 29, 2011

First and foremost, congratulations go to South Adams and quarterback Dustin Wanner for hanging around long enough to put together the game-winning drive in less than 50 seconds Friday night in their 13-10 upset of the much bigger and stronger Bellmont Braves.
The way they earned that win was just hanging in there despite getting outgained 271-98 in rushing yards and netting only six first downs prior to that final drive.

Nine Hunter aces key Squaws by SA

August 26, 2011

No. 1 Bellmont bounced back from a tough loss at Concordia on Tuesday to take out South Adams 25-8, 25-14 and 25-5, Thursday night at the Teepee.
Except for a streak in the second game when South Adams seemed to find all the creases, breaking out to a 10-7 lead, it was all Bellmont in the intra-county showdown.

Kennedy’s strike in OT helps BHS kickers by Eagles

August 26, 2011

Taylor Kennedy scored the first and last goal Thursday in  Bellmont's loop showdown with Columbia City and the defense held up late for a 4-3 Squaws' win over the Eagles.
It was the fourth win without a loss for the Squaws.

Stars must rely on speed vs. big Bellmont lineup

August 25, 2011

With three coaches switching sidelines Friday night at Bob Worthman Stadium, it would make sense that the normal level of intensity at a Bellmont-South Adams football game would increase a bit.
Not so say both head coaches, Larry Getts, who replaced Rick Burkhalter at Bellmont, and Jason Arnold, who recruited Burkhalter to lead his offense at South Adams.

Jets face Union Co. for first time

August 25, 2011

"Our plan is to keep their offense off the field by moving the ball ourselves," stated Union County football coach Rich Padgett on the strategy that his Patriots will use in facing Michael Mosser's No. 6 Adams Central Jets for the first time this Friday night.
The game will take place at Union County, which is located three counties south, 80 miles, and it will begin at 7:30 p.m.
