Braves late runs aid win, 4-2

    FORT WAYNE— The Bellmont Braves opened their 2014 campaign with a 4-2 victory over the South Side Archers at Elmhurst Field on Tuesday night using a three-run sixth inning to boost the win.
    Braves' hurler Mason Shinabery had nine strikeouts in the win going five quality innings, while reliever Ryan Okoniewski aided the rest of the way on the hill for the Braves with the two-inning save.

Former Braves Wetzel, Hakes shine at Tech

    Two Bellmont High School graduates who are longtime friends and current college roommates had great weekends in separate sports for Indiana Tech.
    Zach Wetzel fired a one-under par 71 at Brookwood Golf Club in Fort Wayne to finish second in the U. of Saint Francis Spring Invite, leading his team to a runnerup finish. Ten teams and 60 golfers competed in the event.

Decatur Softball League late registration

    Due to the need for more youth girls to join, the Decatur Girls Softball will hold one late registration on Saturday, April 5.
    The late registration will be held from noon until 2 p.m. at Bellmont High School in the gym lobby.
    The cost of the leagues is $60 for Junior and Senior Leagues, and $50 for Beginner and Advanced Beginner Leagues. This fee covers the fundraiser tickets.

Mitchell leads Komets Squirts to 2nd place

MITCHELL LEADS KOMETS SQUIRTS—A St. Joseph student and a native of Decatur, Mitchell Vogelwede recently led the “Squirt” division of the Komets to a 2nd place finish in the Buckeye League while also taking them into the championship match earning runner-up honors. Through 52 games played in Indy, South Bend, Kalamazoo, Holland, Detroit, Columbus, Dayton, and Cincinnati, the Komets finished strong with a final record of 22-23-7. (Photo provided)

    After the first week of the NCAA tournament, it has been one of the most topsy-turvy competitions in recent memory as upstarts like Dayton, Tennessee, and Stanford look to make their name, and perennial powerhouses have made shocking early exits like Kansas, Duke, Syracuse, and number one seed Wichita State.

March Madness contest 2nd round results

    With the perfect bracket long gone, the March Madness bracket challenge rolls on with the end of the second round nearing a close. For time consuming reasons (189 brackets!!!) the results are accurate through 24 of the 32 games on Friday evening. The best score out of 24 was three brackets with 20 correct games guessed. A majority of the brackets were in the 17-18 point range.
