December 30, 2011

By JIM HOPKINS
MISHAWAKA — Senior Bellmonters Brooks Faurote and Ben Baker battled to championships Thursday at the Al Smith Classic, helping the Braves to an 8-2 final day and a sixth-place finish in one of the toughest high school wrestling tourneys in the nation.

Van Wert holds off Squaws

December 30, 2011

By JOE SPAULDING
Van Wert found a little extra oomph in their game in the fourth period Thursday night and captured what had been a tight ball game against the Bellmont girls up to that point by a final 40-33 tally at the Teepee.
The seven-point margin of victory was the largest lead of the game for either team but was not indicative of the closeness of the game, at least for the first three periods of play.

Lady Jets in romp

December 30, 2011

By DYLAN MALONE
MONROE— The Lady Jets' New Years resolution, according to coach Sam Beer was simple: don't wait until January 1 to play well.
The tactic worked wonders for Adams Central against the visiting Muncie Southside Lady Rebels who were blown out of the building early and often by the Lady Jets in a 70-42 rout.
AC scored a season-high for points in a quarter in the first when they came out and put 23 on the board compared to Southside's nine and the tone was set for the game.

Not a good day at Mishawaka

December 29, 2011

MISHAWAKA —"I guess the wheels fell off the bus today," stated Bellmont wrestling coach Brent Faurote after just four of his Bellmonters qualified for second day action at the 34th annual Al Smith Classic Wrestling Tournament.

Starfires beaten on the road

FOUNTAIN CITY— The Stars traveled to Northeastern High School Tuesday night to face the Knights on the hardwood, but fell short in the contest 62-53.
Coach Andy Brown, whose team falls to 3-5 in his first season, shortened his bench playing only seven Starfires in the game and ran into some foul trouble down the stretch as both senior center Matt Alig and senior guard Dustin Wanner fouled out of the game in the fourth quarter.

MONROE—It wasn't better late than never, but better late than early in Adams Central's 64-50 victory on Tuesday over rival Bellmont.

Jets, Braves tangle tonight at AC

December 27, 2011

By DYLAN MALONE
Tonight marks another meeting between county rivals AC and Bellmont on the hardwood. This year’s Braves/Jets meeting will be held at the Hangar in Monroe and in recent history that bodes well for the Jets.
The home team has won the last three meetings between these schools. Last year at Bellmont, the Braves defended their home field with a stunning 70-63 win against the heavily-favored Jets.

Wrestlers gear up for big invitational

December 27, 2011

There's just something about Mishawaka's Al Smith Invitational, it brings out the best Bellmont effort possible
The rugged 32-team normally has a half dozen ranked teams and usually includes most of northwest Indiana's best. Still, no school has taken home the top trophy more than the Braves in the 33-year history of the meet. Bellmont has 14 titles, and the only reason that number is not 15 is a broken hand suffered by Brooks Faurote in a 3-2 semi-final loss a year ago.

Giving out the gifts

The Christmas season of 2011 is a special one for me. I was fortunate to survive my "event" this past summer. To steal a line from the great philosopher, Yogi, I appreciate all those who made this column necessary!
It's been an eventful year in Adams County sports, and there are many who deserve special rewards. That happens under the Daily Democrat Christmas Tree.
Below are a few of the most deserving:

Braves overcome Stars’ lineup shift for 45-39 win

December 23, 2011

BERNE — South Adams coach Eric Myers rolled the dice with seven lineup changes as his Starfires faced area wrestling behemoth Bellmont for the first time in 40 years, and the result was six victories and 29 points, but it wasn't enough as the No. 17 Braves scored a 45-29 victory at the Stardome Thursday night.
