Bellmont, seeking a 22nd straight sectional mat title, emerged from the seeding meeting with four top spots and two No. 2 seeds for Saturday's Jay County Wrestling Sectional.
ACAC champion Adams Central has two top seeds and four seconds while South Adams has three No. 1 seeds and two seconds.
BELLMONT'S TOP SEEDS: (1) Bobby Keuneke at 120, Brooks Faurote at 145, Dewey Melcher at 152, and Ben Baker at 195; (2) Blake Adams at 126, and Brad Busse at 182; (3) Isaac Birch at 220, and Brian Hakes at 285.
KENDALLVILLE — "I knew sooner or later I was going to get him. It's hard to beat another good guy four times in a row," stated an exuberant Ben Baker after the BHS senior took down Carroll's Spencer Raypole with three seconds left in the match, winning the 195-pound NHC title with the 3-1 victory Saturday at East Noble.
MONROE — Adams Central earned four titles and placed 13 of 14 wrestlers to dominate the ACAC Wrestling Tourney Saturday, piling up 230.5 points to the 189.5 of second-place South Adams.
The win gives the Jets both portions of the ACAC mat crown for the first time in seven years, and it was the first time for the wrestling double by fifth-year head coach Doug Schultz.
"Our kids wrestled up to their ability, about as well as they possibly could," stated Schultz.
FORT WAYNE— The Homestead Spartans had an off-night shooting the basketball against the Bellmont Braves, but because of 27 miscues, John Baker's tribe lost the game in what ended up as a laugher during their Saturday night NHC meeting that saw the final score, 71-39.
The Braves shot a decent 40% from the field but only took 35 shots compared to Homestead's 62 shots hoisted. There was a big discrepancy in free throw shooting as well with the Spartans hitting 17-23 for the game and Bellmont making only five of eight.
The Bellmont boys and girls swim team both recorded eight individual and three relay triumphs Thursday night enroute to posting solid wins over the Adams Central Jets at the BHS pool.
In a meet before an SRO crowd, Bellmont claimed all but one event in both matches with the boys racing to a 123-63 decision while the Squaws earned a 103-60 decision.
The Bellmont girls swim team won all but two events Tuesday night at notched a 96-83 victory over NHC rival DeKalb in action at the Bellmont pool while in the boys meet, the Braves had a much easier time in slamming their Baron foes 141-37.
INDIANAPOLIS — Too many falls given up were the problem for Adams Central Saturday in the tough Warren Central Super Dual as the Jets went 2-3, losing just 35-30 to No. 14 Warren Central and 39-38 to Ben Davis. No. 6 (Coaches' poll) Roncalli stopped the Jets 49-19.
The Jets shut out Howe 69-6 and blanked Northwestern 81-0.
Adams Central stalwarts Derek Roe at 132, Cody Walburn at 120, Ben Pfister at 182 and Zeke Schultz at 152 all went unbeaten on the day.
OSSIAN— Playing the number one team in 3A is never easy, but trying to do so on the road and without your starting point guard to facilitate the offense and anchor the defense, it seemed to be near-impossible for the Squaws on Saturday night as they fell to the top-ranked Lady Knights of Norwell, 78-25.
Allison Gutierrez, still out with an ankle issue, was sorely missed in a game that the Squaws turned the ball over 31 times compared to just six times for the home team Knights.
