Squaws, Stars advance in tennis sectionals

    KINGSLAND— All three Adams County schools will be taking part in the tennis sectional semi-finals today along with Huntington North thanks to the results Wednesday in the opening round at Norwell High School.
    The Bellmont Squaws defeated the Norwell Knights by a 3-2 margin rectifying a loss earlier this year to their NHC foes, while South Adams also earned a sectional win for the first time in several years by downing Bluffton 3-2.

    NEW HAVEN—Six wins, including two new track sectional records, wasn't quite enough for Bellmont Tuesday night but the Carl Risch-led Squaws still qualified for 12 of the 16 events at next week's IHSAA regional at Wayne.

Braves oust Columbia City in dual

    The Braves made due with what they had at the plate Monday night rocking another conference victory over Columbia City at home, 3-1.
    Ryan Okoniewski pitched a complete game victory for the Braves allowing just one run on seven scattered hits with zero walks and four K's.
    "Tonight was a great game," Bellmont coach Ben Fawbush noted. "Ryan pitched extremely well and I couldn't have asked for more of him. His off-speed stuff was working well mixed with his fastball."

Squaws eye sectional track title

    Bellmont girls track coach Carl Risch has predicted "it should be a tight three-team race" for the championship of the IHSAA sectional competition being held at the Patrick D. Monaghan Track and Field Facility in New Haven Tuesday night at 5 p.m. with Bellmont, Wayne, and Homestead as the favorites.

Knous among several Adams Co. products at Huntington

    Bellmont High School graduate Katie Knous wound up a four-year career at Huntington University by leading the Foresters to a record-breaking season in 2014.
    Meanwhile, an Adams Central product, Bess Fiechter, launched her career at Huntington with an outstanding freshman season. Former Parkway standout Lindsay Shellabarger and Southern Wells grad Cristin Carter also played key roles.

Braves golf blasts Barons in Auburn

    AUBURN— The Braves ventured a Greenhurst Country Club in Auburn to face off with NHC foe DeKalb on Tuesday night avoiding the wetter weather down south to win a 155-174 match-up.
    Playing the front nine on the course, Bellmont's Chase Ellsworth finished with a medalist 37 on the day but each Braves' shooter shot better than the Barons' top golfer on the day.
    Grant Ainsworth and Sterling Price each shot 39s just behind Ellsworth, while Corey Coshow and Patrick Wright finished with a 40 each.

Bishop Luers @ Bellmont, softball webcast

    Tonight the Squaws (4-14) host the Bishop Luers Lady Knights (8-9) on the softball field at home. The game is slated to begin at 5 p.m. but is subject to change due to fluctuating school dismissal times. The DDD broadcast will begin approximately 15 minutes before game time.

Squaws earn first NHC track title

    NEW HAVEN—Bellmont scored in all but one event and captured five first place finishes en route to snaring its first-ever Northeast Hoosier Conference girls track conference title Monday night at the Patrick D. Monaghan Track and Field Facility at New Haven High School.
    "The story of the night is that our back-up runners came through to score. You've got to have the horses to win a meet like this and we benefited from scoring two people in a lot of the events," analyzed Bellmont coach Carl Risch.

Leo takes five top spots in ACAC tennis tourney

    MONROE— The Leo Lady Lions dominated the ACAC tennis match at Adams Central’s home Saturday afternoon earning all three first-team conference spots in singles as well as two spots as the top doubles team as well.
    Jen Timbrook won the singles title for the Lions after earning a first-round bye as Leo’s number one player. She defeated Olivia Mishler in the quarters 6-1, 6-2 after AC’s number 3 upset Maddie Graber of South Adams 6-4, 2-6, (11-13).

Gilreath shuts down Jets

    MONROEVILLE— Kara Keller stroked a single to start off the game against the Heritage Patriots on Thursday night.
    After that, no Lady Jets' batter reached base the rest of the game.
    Kamio Gilreath hurled her way to a one-hit shutout against Central at home to top the Jets 3-0 in ACAC play.
    There were no earned runs recorded in the game as Heritage tallied three runs all on AC errors in the first three innings.
