Squaws’ one-two punch kayoes Knights 77-45

    The Holly Hankenson era is on.
    The Bellmont freshman standout easily won both hurdle events, added the long jump and she anchored the winning 1600 relay team to lead Carl Risch's Squaws to a 77-45 win over Bishop Luers Wednesday in the 2011 season track opener at the BHS oval. In the boys meet, Luers  scored a 76-48 victory.

Realignment shakes up sectionals

    Bellmont will go south and will be in the same sectional with Yorktown, while South Adams will be shoved in with nine-time state champion Sheridan as a result of the latest IHSAA two-year realignment plan announced Wednesday afternoon.
    New tourney plans were issued for football, as well as the grouping of baseball, basketball, softball and volleyball, and a new two-class soccer tourney was unveiled.

Chevy to sponsor DBA leagues this year

    The Chevy Youth Baseball program has included the Decatur Baseball Association this year.
    Chevy and through Courtesy Motors of Decatur is sponsoring the Decatur Baseball leagues this year, providing equipment bags and containers, T-shirts, and bat racks for the dugouts.

Strong mix of veterans and frosh talent adds up for Risch’s Squaws

    "We've got senior leadership to go along with a big a strong underclass group. Our numbers are with our younger kids and our leadership is with our seniors. We should be able to combine that and have a pretty good team," stated veteran Bellmont girls track coach Carl Risch.

Wolfe sets senior slugging marks

    WINTER HAVEN, Fla. — Decatur-area resident Bill Wolfe on Thursday concluded a record-breaking season playing for the Winter Haven Phillies of the Winter Haven, Fl. Senior Softball League.
    Wolfe, who pitched in professional baseball decades ago, also for the Philadelphia Phillies, capped another successful winter softball season in Florida with a red-hot final week that enabled the righthanded slugger to lead the league in six offensive categories, setting three all-time league records in the process.

Meyer, Fuelling are pick leaders

    When Ohio State fell Friday night, 67 bracket sheets went into the dead file. When Kansas left the tourney, 45 more sheets died out.
    Currently, Mike Meyer, with 89 points and UConn picked to win, and Dane Fuelling, with 81 points and Butler, are both in the driver's seat for the 2011 DDD March Challenge NCAA picking contest.
    Also taking UConn are Sam Magnan (77), Tim Zeser (75), and John Selking (75).

Baumer is 'Prep Player of the Year'

    The numbers don't lie!
    Adams Central junior Maverick Baumer, a 6-5 junior forward, compiled some impressive statistics this past season as he helped to lead the Jets to their best record in almost 30 years, a 13-8 ledger.
    For his efforts, the Daily Democrat sports staff is naming Baumer the Adams County Boys Prep Player of the Year.

Top scores in the 'DDD March Challenge'

    With all the brackets scored for the opening three rounds leading up to Thursday's regional semi-final battles, some other "DDD March Challenge" contestants deserve mention.
    One of the top scores for the first three rounds belonged to Rob Knefelkamp, who totaled 61 points. Unfortunately, Rob liked Duke to take it all, so he's out. Kevin Ripley and David Miller (of Monroe) totaled 57 points, and picked Duke.

BMS March Athletes

    As is a monthly custom, the Decatur Rotary Club hosted three Bellmont Middle School athletes for a dinner on March 17 at the Back 40 Junction.
    Swimmers Connor Ross and Reagan Burry and wrestler Quinton Ganaway were treated to a meal and given certificates for being named March Athletes of the Month by the Decatur Rotary Club.
    Rotary Club member Penny Parrish presented the three students with certificates.

Fuelling tabbed Marquette, Butler

    Jim Fuelling picked both Butler and Marquette to be in the Sweet 16, the only such picker so far (more sheets to be checked) in the Decatur Daily Democrat March Challenge NCAA picking contest. He scored 54 points in picking Ohio State.
    Josh Fisher and Chester Smith totaled 57 points and both took Kansas. Samantha Macklin did well early and earned 57 points ... but had Texas as the champ.
    Yvonne Raudenbush, a longtime Duke fan, has 54 points and her Blue Devils, and Moss Whitright as the same number and Duke.
