Golf outing to benefit Lou Koning

    The fourth-annual Northeast Indiana Coaches vs. Cancer golf outing on Friday, July 15, will be held in Allen County, with the proceeds to benefit Lou Koning of Decatur, a teacher and basketball coach at Bellmont High School for 32 years who has leukemia.
    The event will be at Brookwood Golf Course, costing $240 per foursome, which includes greens fees, use of a cart, and a meal. There will be a shotgun start at 1 p.m. Hole sponsorships cost $100.

Heaters, Mixers fight for wins

    The top two Decatur seeds in the annual Sandy Koufax League post-season tournament were victorious Wednesday night although not without early challenges in their games.

Crushers, N. Wells in tourney routs

    MONROE—The HME Crushers lived up to their name Tuesday night in the play-in round of the double-elimination Sandy Koufax League tournament by smashing 12 hits, four of which were for extra bases, and easily defeated the Bluffton Parks team, 18-2.
    The Crushers tallied five in the first, four in the second, seven in the third, and then polished the game off with two in the fourth.

DBA sets 2nd Skills Contest

    The second annual Decatur Baseball Association skills contest, for boys ages 7 through 12, will be held on Wednesday, July 6, with registration starting at 5:15 p.m.
    The Clemente (7-8) group will compete at 6 p.m., the Mays (9-10) group at approximately 6:45, and the Reese (11-12) group at approximately 7:30 p.m.
    Players should register as early as possible, or at least a half hour prior to competing.

‘Real’ Koufax draw given

    The tourney draw for the Adams-Wells Koufax League published in Friday's Daily Democrat was apparently in error.
    The correct draw was issued today by league officials. The tourney will begin today with two games at Worthman Field and two games at Don Ray Memorial Park in Monroe. There will be games tonight, Wednesday and Thursday, and games next week on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday.
    The slate, by day, is as follows:

Hakes receives Hobey Baker Character Award

    Brian Hakes of Decatur has been named one of 24 hockey players in Indiana who are recipients of a Hobey Baker Character Award.
    The awards are presented by the Hobey Baker Award Foundation through the Indiana State High School Hockey Association (ISHSHA).

Erie Haven named Reese champions

Thunderbird goes 5-1 for 10s title

    The Decatur Thunderbirds tallied four runs in the top of the fifth inning Sunday in the championship game of the Decatur 10-and-under tournament at Rube Wynn Field and captured the event with a final 19-8 win over Wallen.
    The game was called after five innings due to the 10-run rule.
