PORTLAND — Though Bellmont rallied to within five points of favored Adams Central after two rounds, the Jets closed ranks and put the tourney away in the wrestlebacks and rolled to a 40-point win to break Bellmont's 22-year sectional win skein Saturday at Jay County.
MONROE—Huge plays by Nick Baumer and Pierce Harris late in overtime Friday night at the Hangar spurred Adams Central to a pulsating 49-47 ACAC nail biter over the Heritage Patriots.
Baumer was johnny-on-the-spot for the Jets with :22.2 remaining and the AC lads down 47-46 when he grabbed an offensive rebound off a missed shot by Dalton Combs. Baumer's put back went in and he was fouled sending him to the foul line where he completed the traditional three-point play for the 49-47 score.
Though Bellmont has a long history—22 years long—of winning the area wrestling sectional, the Braves will need some upsets and a generally great day to challenge favorite Adams Central Saturday at the Jay County Wrestling Sectional.
KENDALLVILLE—The Bellmont boys’ swimming and diving team won its second meet in a row on Tuesday to improve to 6-3 with a 115-64 win against East Noble at the Cole YMCA in Kendallville.
Senior Trey Schisler was a double winner for Bellmont in the 200 IM and 100 butterfly, as was senior Zac Torrey in the 50 and 100 freestyle races. Junior Harrison Jacobson won the 100 backstroke and senior Austin Jones won the 100 breaststroke. Sophomore Dakota Massman won the 1 meter diving event.
The 2013 IHSAA sectional wrestling draw took place on Monday night and as expected, the favorites on paper are Adams Central ranked #1 in class A as well as winners of the first coaches' team state tournament and second straight ACAC title.
Of the 14 weights represented at the individuals only sectional this season, the Jets boast the best odds of advancing according to rank with four number one seeds, while South Adams harbors three top seeds and the Braves hold one top spot.
BERNE — The wrestling Jets answered the call of head coach Doug Schultz Saturday with all 14 grapplers earning places, including four championships, as the Jets took the ACAC Wrestling Tournament with 242 points to the 220 of second-place Leo. South Adams was third with 202 points.
“Really, going in we thought our depth could win the thing and that’s exactly how we won. Our kids came back and got a lot of pins in the wrestlebacks and that was key,” said Schultz.
AUBURN — Carroll took four championships and five runner-up slots, and all 14 wrestlers scored Saturday as the Chargers held off East Noble 262-248.5 to add the 2013 Northeast Hoosier Conference Wrestling Tournament crown to their dual-meet season title.
BLUFFTON—It was a 42-42 tie with 1:35 left in the ball game when Chandler Prible stole a pass at mid-court and drove in for a lay-up that put Bluffton up for good on the Adams Central Flying Jets Friday night at the Tigers' Den.
Both teams entered the contest 3-0 in the ACAC but Bluffton was the team hoisting up the hardware after knocking off Woodlan in the title game at the Coliseum last week for the conference crown.
