The latest fulltime officer on the Decatur Police Department is a lifetime resident of the city, Christopher Everett, 27. He is a 2002 graduate of Bellmont High School and a 2010 graduate of Ivy Tech College in Fort Wayne with a degree in criminal justice. Everett served as a reserve officer for a short time before becoming a fulltime patrolman. The icy remains of water from a ruptured fire sprinkler pipe inside the former Gerber's supermarket in Decatur Plaza shopping center on the north side of the city is seen Tuesday, Jan. 25. The pipe apparently broke early that morning and city water department workers were called at 3:45 a.m. to cut off the water flow to the building. That work was done outside and took about two hours because the men had to locate valves at ground level amid piles of snow and ice, according to Decatur Water Superintendent Jim Inskeep.

A familiar fellow was first to file on Jan. 19, as the 2011 city and town election process began. Decatur Mayor John Schultz, a Democrat seeking a second term, filed for the May 3 primary election by signing papers in the Adams County Clerk's office, while Clerk Gayla Reinhart observed. The last day to file a candidacy for elective offices in Decatur, Berne, and Monroe will be on Friday, February 18, by noon in the clerk's office at the courthouse in Decatur.
Dave Baumgartner was honored as the driving force behind the construction of the Muensterberg Clock Tower by being named as the Citizen of the Year by the Berne Chamber of Commerce. He accepted his plaque Jan. 18, from Nancy Brown, a chamber representative and DRG employee.
