It’s every bit as ironic as it is lamentable that the one member of the North Adams school board who seems to have a true handle on the “majority rule” concept of government will soon be the odd-man-out, a victim of the same antiquated method of seating board members that he voted to retain earlier this week.
But Juan Gutierrez’ lone vote in opposition to a citizens’ petition calling for an elected school board was the correct one, and we appreciate his courage in casting it.

While no primary election will be held in Adams County this year, it should be remembered that both political parties have until July 5 to fill vacant spaces on their ballots.
At this time, four members of Decatur City Council — Republicans Ken Meyer and Matt Dyer, Democrats Charlie Cook and Bill  Crone — have no opposition for the November vote. Nor do Mayor John Schultz and Clerk-Treasurer Phyllis Whitright, both Democrats.

Films based on actual events have pluses and minuses. The minus is that they tend to overdramatize the story they are trying to tell. The plus is that more often than not you’re given a glimpse into an amazing story. The thing I’ve noticed with most is that the plus almost always outweighs the minus, especially since most of us are privy to the reality that was.

Teachers at North Adams Community Schools have been working without a new collective bargaining agreement since previous one expired on July 31, 2010. Thanks to a so-called “status quo” provision of current state law, however, the terms of the previous, albeit expired, contract between the school district and the North Adams Teachers Association (NATA) will remain in effect until the next pact is negotiated and ratified.

The current session of the Indiana Legislature doesn't lack for some really dumb ideas. One of them has garnered little publicity, but ranks near the top on the dumb list.
A bill introduced in the Senate by Sen. Jean Leising, R-Oldenburg, would ban public access to traffic accident reports for a period of 90 days after the accident.

The past few years the vampire film has changed from what began as a horrifying creature to a seductive animal, followed by more creatures and finally with the TWILIGHT films a vampire more interested in seduction than, say, draining blood. All that changed with a wel-received Swedish film called LET THE RIGHT ONE IN.

There is hope, folks. Honest to goodness hope.     If Don Spice has his way, maybe sometime this spring the tall building on the corner of Second and Monroe streets once famous for its Holthouse Drug Co. business — but now the one most referred to as "the eyesore" — will be renovated, cleaned up and functioning as a business ... or businesses.

Mary Jo Toole wants you to know everything is going well at Operation Help these days — "blessed" is the word she uses — but please don't take that to mean you can quit helping. No one wants to go back to where the local food bank was in the latter days of 2010, when the place had to close for a couple of days due to a lack of food on its shelves.
