I guess it’s a good thing that we elect Republicans (and their newfound BFF tea party cronies) to Congress every few years, just so we can remember why we voted them out of office in the first place.

Decatur long ago earned the label of "Tree City." And probably before the summer of 2012 we'll have another 700 or so reasons to point to.
City Forester Dwight Pierce announced last week that the city has received a $30,000 grant which will be used to purchase some 600 trees to be planted around the city. Another 88 trees were bought with $4,000 from the city’s Storm Water Department.

In 1982 at the height of the video arcade games popularity a movie came out that fans clamored to see. It was a hit film that year and when released on video and later DVD became a hit as well, even though it hadn’t been available for some time. And now a new generation has access to not only the original film but a sequel that takes us back to the Grid, back to a place no one has ever seen, back to the world of TRON.

With school closings occurring with ever more frequency — Monmouth Elementary, Elmhurst and Harding high schools to name just three — it is interesting to note a bit of history which came across the desk via an old newspaper.    In the first week of August, 1963, the South Adams School Board  voted to close not one but two schools: Hartford and Jefferson township schools.

In case no one has heard, finances are tight just about everywhere, Well, unless you're one of those 400 folks who own more wealth than the rest of the people in the nation combined.
High school and middle school athletic programs are among those butting heads with tight budgets. These days it takes a little ingenuity, some serious thought, and a whole bunch of hard work to come up with ways to raise a few bucks and then make it all work.

When WHO’S LINE IS IT ANYWAY? premiered on television I thought it was one of the best shows around. I’ve always loved improve comedy. It started when I saw SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE the first time only to learn that most of the cast began at Second City in Chicago. In college I got my first taste of Second City and fell in love with it, making it a point to visit each time I go there now.

It seems that horror films have changed drastically over the past few years. Where once there was a cycle that lasted about 10 years between horror films being popular, they seem to be more mainstream now than ever.
Not only that, the horror genre has kicked into gear, crossing over into other areas as well. Books like THE ZOMBIE SURVIVAL GUIDE, zombie movies galore and finally the comic book series that has now made its way to TV and DVD: THE WALKING DEAD.

It’s every bit as ironic as it is lamentable that the one member of the North Adams school board who seems to have a true handle on the “majority rule” concept of government will soon be the odd-man-out, a victim of the same antiquated method of seating board members that he voted to retain earlier this week.
But Juan Gutierrez’ lone vote in opposition to a citizens’ petition calling for an elected school board was the correct one, and we appreciate his courage in casting it.
