There are many who would have been stunned when they heard that a silent movie won for best picture in 2012 at the Oscars. Okay, I admit I was one of those people. But after having had the chance to see the film it made me think that perhaps Hollywood granted the award for two reasons: one, because it is a great film and, two, because it is a love note to the Golden Age of Hollywood.

I’ve long been of the belief that “it takes a village to raise a child” is little more than a warm and fuzzy catch-phrase that gives some degree of credence to well-meaning civic activists attempting to dabble in social interaction and to cure social ills that are often well outside their individual and collective areas of expertise.

For a perfect example of the huge problems that can be created by lawmakers blindly following the party line, look no further than the South Bend-Fort Wayne Diocese's recent attempt to purchase an empty Monroeville school building.

There are tons of movies released every year and the fact is all of them can't be the most stupendous movie ever made. But there are many that fall into the category of fun movies that offer no redeeming value whatsoever and yet are filled with fun and energy. THIS IS WAR is one of those movies, a film that's fun to watch and may be worth watching again and yet it offers no social redeeming value. So what? It's a movie, kids!

With all of the no-hitters and perfect games this season, it has become clear to some that pitching is on the rise but reading between the lines, steroids are on the down.
There will be no race for 70 homeruns this season and certainly no controversy to follow. A few seasons back the MLB and its front office frowned at Toronto Blue Jays heavy-hitter Jose Bautista for hitting 54 homeruns in 2010, tops in the bigs and most since A-Rod had 54 in 2007.

It's the stuff that excites movie producers; that books are written about; that dreams are made of. "Hoosiers" in a softball uniform. The team that never wins the title, the team that's always a bridesmaid, the team that can't get out of its own way is suddenly — almost unexplicably — rolling along like some gigantic snowball, gaining more momentum along the way.

If you're like me you grew up watching horror films made by Hammer Studios. These were not your run-of-the-mill horror films but classily-made films that featured some of the classic horror icons like Dracula and Frankenstein, but in more of a gothic location.

That the newspaper industry is going through some difficult times, with print versions indeed likely headed for the way of the dodo bird and 8-track cassettes, is fairly common knowledge. This historic shift from newsprint to electronic forms of information distribution is seen by many as little more than the a natural evolution of technology and day-to-day life in the 21st century. Nonetheless, it is more than a little disconcerting to an aging journalist — one still a handful of years shy of retirement age — who is desperately clinging to a dying industry.
