Wrestling season look back

March 3, 2014

While it would have been great for some of the five Adams County state wrestlers to come away with placements last weekend at the IHSAA State Wrestling finals, that disappointment doesn’t take away from very successful seasons from both Bellmont and Adams Central had...and South Adams for that matter.
As it turns out, there are no really good draws at state, Bringing in the top 16 wrestlers from around the state in each class ... well, it guarantees some mean competition.

Chillin' with Dylan — Boys basketball preview

February 28, 2014

By DYLAN MALONE
With wrestling, swimming and girls basketball in the books for the county, all eyes are on the boys basketball sectionals this Tuesday night.
I’m marking this year down as the rare occasion that it is (almost as rare as a Friday column...how exciting!).

Chillin' with Dylan - My take on the All-Star Game

February 20, 2014

By DYLAN MALONE
Another All-Star Weekend in the books for the NBA and even though the casual sports fan may not know much about the league, there was definitely a huge number of them watching the city of New Orleans putting on a show.

Chillin' with Dylan- Much ado about the weather

January 30, 2014

By DYLAN MALONE
Let me get the obvious out of the way...
When will this Indiana weather become predictable enough to bear?
Last year was the epitome of extremes as the baseball/softball programs had to wait for the snow on the ground to melt before getting on the field late March, then we sat through an April/May drought with temps in the high 80s.
    That’s the norm around here.

Chillin' with Dylan—The agony of a lot of defeats

January 23, 2014

You can see it on their faces.
The Bellmont girls basketball team has had a tough season and it wears on everybody.
Losing, in all things and not just sports, is just an awful thing in life. Some people lose their entire lives and never really know what it feels like to win.

Get Your Own Whistle—An official farewell for Bob

January 15, 2014

I can hear the public address announcer now up in heaven for tonight’s big game between the Jerusalem Giants and the Bethlehem Braves.
After the teams have been introduced, the announcer (probably Bob Shepherd, the late great PA voice for the New York Yankees) will boom out “and tonight’s officials for our championship game are Al Lindahl, Orv Reed, Jerry Leitz, Dave Habegger, and a new addition to their crew, Bob Boyle.”

Chillin' with Dylan—NFL rule changes looming

January 8, 2014

By DYLAN MALONE
It was only a matter of time.
Money talks in this world and sometimes it is never more obvious than in the sports world. Sad but true.
It is money that makes baseball games last three hours at least thanks to an over-abundance of commercials. Money that has finally expanded the college bowl situation as well as the continuing growth of March Madness for college basketball. Money also is the reason the NFL nearly had to blackout a few Wildcard games.

The Stalker Within – By JANNAYA ANDREWS

With Christmas and New Year’s now in the books, thoughts often turn to ways we may better ourselves, perhaps even make a genuine contribution to help others ... a way, oftentimes, to chase away that pesky feeling of unworthiness, usually created and maintained solely within the confines of our own mind.
Our inner stalker, if you will.

Butts and carrots – By J SWYGART

As I write this, it is 2013. As you read it, it’s 2014.
A distinction without much of a difference, perhaps. Then again, maybe so.
Before sitting down to write today’s entry I went through my usual routine, which includes heading to the alley behind the Democrat (or under the awning in front, depending on which way the wind is blowing and other key weather considerations) to have that ever-present cigarette.
