Lumps of coal in sports
By DYLAN MALONE
It took me a long time to grow this Christmas beard, but I’m happy with the results. Merry Christmas early to everyone. I hope everybody gets exactly what they want for Christmas.
I know I will...six NBA games in one day! It’s about time.
In sticking with the festive themes, I thought a lot about the Christmas spirit and the good boys and girls who get what they ask from Santa Claus.

I was going over the Indiana AP polls for boys basketball pre-season and I couldn't help but notice that AC wasn't on there. The Jets opened their season with probably their toughest challenge they will face until sectionals and possibly beyond in the Norwell Knights.

It would seem those of us who appreciate the beautiful flowers in the downtown pots each year can relax a bit. It's becoming more likely each day that the flowers will be returning next summer.

It seems these days that young people tend to ignore history or relate to it only in the amount of time they’ve had on Earth. Anything beyond that is unimportant to them. At the same time they tend to focus more on social and media material than on things as simple as books, limiting themselves to the intake of knowledge. With the release of THE HELP, one can only hope that it inspires them to look deeper, to find out the real story of what happened with the civil rights questions of the ‘60s.

The Skill of the Swat
I was hoping to avoid the cliché of simply writing a column about each statistic in basketball after discussing assists last week, but that was before I witnessed Adams Central put the “laughter” in slaughter at the Hangar on Tuesday night when they beat Union City to a useless pulp, 86-25.

Happy Thanksgiving to all. I’m stuffed and I’ll be eating turkey sandwiches until they are coming out of my ears, but I don’t care because I love this time of year!
The NFL is just heating up and usually around this time the NBA regular season kicks in and adds a little flavor to my sports watching. With the lockout still making everyone angry, I’ve turned to college basketball to supplement my hoops hysteria. (My tar heels are still number one!)

Say what you will, but given the fact that only two names were on the ballot, a 27 percent turnout for the recent election here probably wasn't all that awful. There have been elections with many more candidates that didn't draw a turnout much larger than 27 percent.
Those turnout numbers, though, also underscore the sheer stupidity of not having unopposed candidates on the ballot — unless, of course, one is concerned only with saving money.
