From Left Field

Vi Smith was so far ahead of her time it was like Alexander Graham Bell using a smart phone; like Genghis Kahn using drones for his conquests.
Vi played basketball and ran track with the guys ... and was one of, if not THE, best of the bunch. She bowled against the guys ... and often won. She did it long before girls were allowed to sweat and on into the time when they could sweat on an athletic field so long as the guys got to win.

Alone With J

Before taking off on a mini diatribe on the sometimes annoying habits of others — which I am about to do — let it be said that I know I’m not perfect; that I often do things which leave others scratching their heads or mumbling words (usually they type unsuitable for publication in a family newspaper) under their breath.

Well, here we are once again, boys and girls. US 224 is flooded at the Bellmont High School entrance/exit, it's causing all manner of traffic problems, and the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) plan to raise the highway in that area is sort of floating along on top of the floodwater, with no definitive time for the project to get going.

Adams County pride and more baseball changes

By DYLAN MALONE
I am once again overly impressed with how talented our wrestlers are in this part of the state. It can’t be overstated just how much success breeds success, especially in a team sport like wrestling.
Adams County was the bane of every other wrestling team in the region on Saturday when they dominated the sectional tournament at Jay County High School.
How badly did the three schools terrorize the rest of the field?

The streak goes full circle...

"I haven't got any letters, yet," stated Bellmont wrestling coach Brent Faurote, whose Braves had their 22-year stranglehold on area sectional wrestling stopped by a championship Adams Central squad Saturday at Jay County.

I had the opportunity to watch some third and fourth graders play basketball over the weekend at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Classic. The teams were part of a Midwest regional AAU tournament with members from the Spiece Fieldhouse and Gym Rats.

Kicke'em while they're down ... but hurry!

"Somehow, it doesn't seem right, going into this week and not really being a factor," stated Bellmont coach Brent Faurote, who is very used to the rest of the NHC figuring a way to take Bellmont down.
    It just never happened.
    Never, however, is now.

There’s no underselling just how important sports are to our culture. Yes, they are just games played by professionals who get paid to participate in them for a living, but who pays their salaries? We do. The fans.
We love sports. I love sports. That’s why I’m here, of course. I enjoy sports so I write about them for a living and it’s not a bad gig.
