Chillin' with Dylan

April 11, 2013

I had planned on waiting until next week for another column completing a two-week sabbatical but all of this rain has given me room (and time) to collect my thoughts.
    What a week!

Cutting Corners

It might be that time. That time when your waist begins to whisper (as mine has been doing) that maybe we've had it a little TOO good this winter. When you consider as you do that stupid little hopping motion known in some circles as the "pants dance" to pull up your jeans that it might be time to take off a few pounds.
But you can't afford a gym membership and don't have time to use one anyway. Not to mention, exercising just sounds like so much...EFFORT.

For Ethan Scorey, it was adrenalin kicking in and "doing what you gotta do."
For Kirsten Cochran, it was a matter of reacting to a situation ... and perhaps saving a man's life with a mere few tugs of his body.

In recognition of National Inhalants and Poison Prevention Week, March 17–23, the Substance Abuse Awareness Council is alerting the public about the dangers of inhalants and ways to prevent childhood poisoning.
Youth in our community, even those in middle school, are using inhalants to get high. They are so dangerous that “sudden sniffing death” can result after a single session of inhalant use.

It's hard to believe that there is a young generation out there that didn't experience 9/11 first-hand. For those of us who lived through it, it doesn't seem all that long ago. So this generation can't quite grasp the importance of Osama Bin Laden's death.

The Madness continues...

By DYLAN MALONE
What is it about March Madness that has me cheering against my favorite teams? Those who filled out a bracket, whether for the DDD contest or otherwise, know what I’m talking about.
It’s the same as fantasy football or basketball. We get so caught up in winning the side game that what actually happens affects us during the games.

If you are a college student and your school's basketball team is in the NCAA or any other post-season tournament, you might as well root 'em on. You're likely helping pay the team's way ... as well as the scholarships provided the players.

    Local control.
Elected officials in counties, cities, townships and schools ask for it constantly. Actually, they mostly whine for it, all the while bemoaning Big Brother in Indianapolis — which they claim is constantly imposing the collective will of state lawmakers to the detriment of small units of local government statewide.
And for the most part, that’s not an entirely inaccurate assessment.
