I held off on the usual Thursday musings from my “Chillin” column because I knew that I would be taking in baseball games at Parkview Field in Fort Wayne. Even though I’m an avid Tin Caps fan, they were not playing on Thursday night.
The ACAC rented out the field for what has become one of the greatest events for high school baseball players in the conference each year. Each of the eight teams in the Allen County Athletic Conference met up in the last two days at Parkview Field to clash with each other.
I watched a lot of good sports this week with the hockey post season heading into its second round, soccer greats Real Madrid and Barcelona faced off in a critical league game, and the NBA playoff push ends today with the last day of the season.
There was enough drama in all of that to hold me over for awhile, but little did I know that there would be an incident on the basketball court that would make me forget all about the other drama in the sporting world.

NBA hoops are nearing their regular season end and if you're like me (or even the most casual of fans) you are probably saying, "Already?"
The shortened season is indeed coming to an end here and the playoffs are set to begin next weekend. With the shortened season there was no shortage of drama on and off the court. Sprinkle in some injuries to key players on almost every team and you've got the formula for a very interesting playoffs.
Baseball season has come around at last and I have been just plain giddy going around taking in some local action this week and last.
The weather has been more than adequate for baseball as I’m usually wearing layers still at this time, but Mother Nature has allowed me to wear shorts for the entire month of March. Simply beautiful.

Okay, we’re gonna start today’s entry with something a little different — a disclaimer; a warning of sorts. Today’s column will take a look at how the North Adams school board later this year will begin its metamorphosis from an appointed body into an elected one. It’s a complex and complicated transition formula. We’ll try to break it down into simplistic terms, but there’s a 50-50 chance we will fail miserably.

In Florida, a person can be arrested and sent to prison for up to three years for pointing a gun at someone. But that same person can shoot and kill that same someone, claim it was in self-defense and, due to the state's "stand your ground" law, cannot be arrested unless it can be proved the shooter was in no way threatened.

The genre of film known as "sword and sandal" has gone up and down over the years. A staple of films in the late '50s and early '60s, the genre lost favor when the age of the anti-hero and film student filmmakers took over.
But in 2000 that changed when GLADIATOR hit the screens and planted Russell Crowe firmly in the position of movie star. More movies followed like TROY and 300. And so it is we now have the latest film based on Greek mythology, IMMORTALS.

There are movies that are released and then discussed later when Oscar time rolls around as being the next best thing since sliced bread. The actors and directors are talked about and make the talk show route. Almost always these incidents are nothing more than hype, trying to drum up interest in a film that is nominated but nowhere near as good as they claim. Then there are the rare times when it all clicks and turns out to be true as with THE DESCENDANTS.

The last week in March is always one of the stranger weeks of the year here at the old newspaper factory. Staffers in the editorial department of the Democrat are catching their breath after the publication of our progress edition — this year called People, Places & Profiles — and it’s always a post-partum time, of sorts. Meanwhile, life in Decatur and Adams County has slowed to a crawl during this annual spring break mystery tour as half the residents headed south for some fun in the sun.
Spring is truly here and this week in sports marks the change in season as we see the end of college basketball with the Final Four on Saturday night and the beginning of baseball season.
A game in Tokyo between the Mariners and A’s was played yesterday to kick off the season with one more game today to finish the Asian showcase.
