Hop's Heresy-Out of State, out of mind

November 16, 2012

Think about it. You’re going to put on an Indiana “state” wrestling tournament, and 24 teams in three classes will get invited. I wouldn’t  have to know anything about the rosters -  which state placers are coming back, how many starters return, etc. ‑ to come up with a pretty fine tourney.
And, about the second or third team on my mind, after Evansville Mater Dei and Perry Meridian, would be Bellmont, right!

Chillin with Dylan—The female athlete

    Girls are funny.
There can be no denying that the women-type are a lot different then the men and in ways that outnumber the stars that’s a great thing. In particular, though, girls are vastly different in the way they play sports.
I suppose it boils down to priorities for most girls. When I was in high school (back when Star Wars: Episode III came out and it was supposed to be the last one), the girls in sports played for different reasons.

Chillin' with Dylan—Athletes in Politics

I'm going to keep my opinions on the election to myself despite an enormous strain on my conscience.
I decided instead to highlight some of the more interesting figures in the sports world who then transitioned to the political realm. No, Arnold Schwarzenegger will not make an appearance on this list. I know he's a body-builder but until they put the World Series of Body-Building on national television I just don't see the connection.

You really have to feel sorry for most college football fans; the real fans, fans of the big-time programs, anyway. They pay their 50 bucks a game — or $30 or $100, depending on the school — and get abused up one side and down the other.

You have to wonder who woke up Wednesday morning feeling worse.
Was it Richard Mourdock, the Republican Senate candidate from Indiana who stumbled ... badly ... before a live television audience Tuesday evening with his pronouncement that when a woman becomes pregnant during a rape, ‘‘that’s something God intended’’?

One of the many benefits of blu-ray movies is that studios, knowing these will be the most pristine versions of their films, make the effort to insure that they are of the highest quality when it comes to how they look. One studio that has done this in spades is Disney. Their blu-ray and Diamond Editions are well worth the cost. And now they're releasing one of the classics to the Diamond Edition fold, CINDERELLA.

When one hears the words "boot camp," it conjures up thoughts of Marines crawling on their bellies in mud, running 15 miles, smashing into each other as a DI (drill instructor) screams and rants.
Not so the boot camp held for youngsters at Anytime Fitness on 13th St. last summer. This boot camp provided several forms of exercise and, equally important,
some education on nutrition.

As I started to write this week's column I was going to write about ROCK OF AGES. Then I thought why waste the space on something I didn't like much (although it did make me want to go seek out the music in my collection) when I could write about a small movie that was better? And more qualified for the Halloween season as well.

Hop's Heresy

November 2, 2012

Thirty years ago this past summer, my Decatur Little League Senators were getting ready for the Adams County Little League Championship game. Just before the start of the game I noticed that veteran umpire George Thomas was cajoling my two best players, Guy Lee and Mark Hunter.
“I was just telling them that I’ll be watching them and I won’t put up with any of their antics,” explained Thomas.

Could it really be basketball season already?
I’ve been counting the days but it still snuck up on me with all of the winning fall sports teams. Yes, Jet fans, I know you’re still going tomorrow against North Miami but I want to look ahead a little.
I won’t talk about the county teams yet (you’ll have to wait for the DDD’s winter preview coming out mid-November…) but the college and NBA are getting underway.
