Kathryn L. Yager, 89, Decatur, died Sunday. Arrangements are pending at Zwick & Jahn Funeral Home in Decatur.
Maxine T. Jauregui, 79, Decatur, died on Thursday, Oct. 23, 2014. Maxine was born in Littleton, Maine on Nov. 17, 1934, to the late Elbridge and Hazel (Wiley) Elliott. On September 15, 1954, she married Joseph R. Jauregui.
Maxine was a member of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church and the Women of St. Mary’s. She was also a member of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary.
Wilbert W.M. Thieme, 86, Decatur, passed away on Friday, Oct. 31, 2014, at his residence. He was born in Adams County on Wednesday, April 18, 1928, to the late Charles E.W. and Flora L. (Gallmeier) Thieme. He married Ella L. Roehm on August 27, 1950 in the Zion Lutheran Church in Schumm, Ohio; she survives.
The American Red Cross is in the process of cutting 1,200 jobs across the country. The program specialist for the Adams County shapter, Vikki Ellis, was among those let go during the nationwide cuts. Her last day on the job was Friday.
The Red Cross fiscal year runs from July to June. Ellis said that at the end of fiscal year 2014 the numbers showed the Red Cross was operating at a $70 million deficit. “You can’t continue to do that and keep the doors open everywhere,” Ellis said.
The polls will open at 6 a.m. Tuesday and close 12 hours later as voting in the 2014 General Election takes place in Adams County and throughout the nation.
Adams County voters will have the opportunity to cast their ballots in two countywide contested ballots Tuesday.
Members of the Bellmont volleyball team walked off the court in dejected fashion Saturday after their season came to an end in the Class 6A semi-state tournament. Bellmont fell to Concordia, while the Adams Central Lady Jets also saw their season end with a semi-state loss to Southwood in Class 2A. A lawsuit filed last week in U.S. District Court in Fort Wayne contains allegations of rape against a former Adams County jail staffer. The suit also accuses Sheriff Shane Rekeweg and an unnamed female jail staffer of negligence in allowing the alleged sexual assaults to take place.
A brief ceremony was held Thursday afternoon — 60 years, nearly to the minute, after an Indiana auto racing legend died in a cornfield near Peterson in Adams County — to pay tribute to the man credited with saving the Indianapolis Motor Speedway from extinction.
Three checkered flags, some flowers and a makeshift podium were assembled along County Road 500N at 4:30 p.m. for the ceremony marking the remembrance of the lives of Wilbur Shaw and two other men who were killed in a plane crash at the site in 1954.
