The Decatur Daily Democrat captured five awards in the Indiana Associated Press Managing Editors’ 2014 news and photo competition.
The results of the contest, which recognizes outstanding newspaper writing and photography by member news organizations during 2013, were announced Thursday.
Daily Democrat staff reporter Mike Lamm won first place in the general interest column-writing competition. Entrants were asked to submit three opinion pieces and were judged on the total body of their work.

MITCHELL LEADS KOMETS SQUIRTS—A St. Joseph student and a native of Decatur, Mitchell Vogelwede recently led the “Squirt” division of the Komets to a 2nd place finish in the Buckeye League while also taking them into the championship match earning runner-up honors. Through 52 games played in Indy, South Bend, Kalamazoo, Holland, Detroit, Columbus, Dayton, and Cincinnati, the Komets finished strong with a final record of 22-23-7. (Photo provided)
Richard Buuck, 101, Decatur, passed away at 12:05 a.m. Wednesday, March 26, 2014, at Woodcrest Nursing Center. He lived in the same home his entire life.
He was born on Sunday, September 1, 1912, in Adams County, to the late Otto and Maria (Decker) Buuck.
Richard married Margaret S. Hoffman on May 8, 1943, in the Zion Lutheran Church in Decatur; she passed away on February 14, 2013.
Richard was a lifelong member of Zion Lutheran Church-Friedheim.
Esther Jane Henrey, 91, rural Wren, Ohio, went to the arms of her savior at 12:55 p.m. March 25, 2014, at CHP Inpatient Hospice Center, Van Wert.
She was born May 22, 1922, to Anna E. (Gahman) and Clarence R. Abbott in Craigville.
She graduated from Tully Convoy High School in 1940. She married James Paul Henrey April 9, 1944.
James W. “Barney / Jimmy” King Sr., 70, Uniondale, passed away at 8 a.m. Wednesday, March 26, 2014, at his residence surrounded by his loving family.
He was born on May 29, 1943, in Bluffton, to Gerald and Anna Louise (Bennett) King.
Adams County Clerk of Courts Gayla Reinhart has announced early voting hours for the 2014 May primary election will be held from 8 a.m.- 4:30 p.m., April 8 through May 2, in the hallway of the Adams County courthouse, on the main level.
Early voting will also be held from 8 a.m.-noon on May 5, the day before this year’s May 6 primary balloting. Saturday early voting hours will be from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. April 26 and May 3.
