Hoagland area home a total loss following fire

    The Decatur Fire Department was dispatched at 1:44 p.m. Monday to assist the Hoagland Volunteer Fire Department on a house fire at a home listed to Florence Hoffman, 12815 Barkley Road, Hoagland.

Homer Junior Arnold

December 29, 2014

    Homer Junior Arnold, 83, Berne, passed away Sunday, Dec. 28, 2014, at Swiss Village. He was born in Kirkland Township in Adams County Aug. 25, 1931, to the late Homer W. and Lulu (Byerly) Arnold. On April 6, 1952 he married his wife of 62 years, Edith M. (Steury) Arnold; she survives in Berne.

    JoAnne Prowant, 87, Dupont, Ohio, died peacefully at her daughter's home in Decatur at 8:48 p.m. Friday, Dec. 26, 2014, surrounded by her loving family.
    Born and raised in Dupont, the daughter of Warren and Aura Myers, she was lifelong resident of Dupont.

Longest war in US history ending, says president

    HONOLULU (AP) — President Barack Obama says the longest war in American history is coming to a responsible conclusion.
Obama is welcoming the end of U.S. combat operations in Afghanistan. The war came to a formal end Sunday with a ceremony in Kabul.
Obama says in a statement that the effort has devastated al-Qaida’s core leadership, brought justice to Osama bin Laden and disrupted terrorist plots. He says U.S. troops and diplomats have helped Afghans reclaim their communities and move toward democracy.

    Jyalin Reed, 6, had her hands full with a heavy ball, but that didn’t seem to take away from her enjoyment during a family outing at Villa Lanes Saturday as part of the Decatur Parks and Rec Christmas break activities.

    Area youngsters and their families are invited to the Limberlost State Historic Site Visitor Center from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Wednesday for an early New Year’s Eve celebration.  The highlight of the event will be a countdown to a noon New Year balloon drop.

    Elizabeth Angalene "Angie" Amstutz, 95, Berne, passed away Thursday, Dec. 25, 2014, at Swiss Village where she was a resident. She was born in Adams County March 20, 1919, to the late Paul and Frieda Zurcher Habegger. She married Ray Sharp Feb. 11, 1940, and he passed away on April 22, 1950. She later married Ernie Amstutz August 15, 1951, and he passed away on Oct. 10, 1984.
