School closings and delays

February 5, 2015

 8:32 a.m. LATEST UPDATE: North Adams Community Schools, St. Joseph Catholic and Wyneken Lutheran Memorial schools have now closed for the day. South Adams is operating on a 2 hour delay and Adams Central is now running on a 3 hour delay. In neighboring Ohio, Parkway Local, Van Wert City Schools and Vantage Career Center are on a 2 hour delay while Crestview Local is now running on a 3 hour delay. Jay County Schools are running on a 3 hour delay. Northern Wells, Bluffton-Harrison and Southern Wells are now closed. We will update this information as needed.

Options discussed for old Decatur City Hall

    Decatur now has two city halls and it is proceeding on unloading the previous structure.
    Mayor John Schultz said at Tuesday night’s city council meeting that two appraisals of the value of the building have been received: $53,000 from Steve Kreigh Enterprises of Decatur and $75,000 from Complete Appraisal Service of Bluffton.

McKean will seek second term as mayor of Berne

    Berne Mayor Bill McKean has announced he will seek a second term in office and has filed the necessary paperwork to run as a candidate in the May primary election.
    McKean, a Republican, took over the mayor’s office Jan. 1, 2012, after soaring to an easy victory over Democrat Ray Gill in the November 2011 general election.

    Decatur Street Department crews worked to move a big pile of snow left from a plow Tuesday morning in front of the post office in anticipation of more snow that was expected (but never materialized). Three trucks were making circles between piles of snow and the compost farm, where they were piling the snow.

Decatur mayoral race is assurred Democrat Mike Miller tosses hat in the ring

    A long talk with his late father convinced Mike Miller he should run for mayor of Decatur. His dad, Harold, knew something about the job, having served three terms, 12 years, as mayor.
     So Miller announced Monday he will seek the Democratic nomination in this year’s primary.
    Mayor John Schultz has announced that he will not seek a third term. The only Republican candidate at this time is Ken Meyer, a member of city council. The filing deadline is noon Friday.

Mississinewa @ Bellmont, boys basketball webcast

Tonight the Braves entertain the Mississinewa Indians in a potential sectional preview at the Teepee. The varsity tip-off is slated for 7:45 p.m. and the pre-game show will be set for launch around 15 minutes after the JV conclusion. Tune in to watch the Braves go for win number 6!

Commish officially put superior court project ‘on hold’

    The plans to construct a new Adams County Superior Court building were officially shelved Monday when the Adams County commissioners approved a motion to put the project “on hold.”
    Late in the meeting, Commission Chairman Doug Bauman opened the weekly judicial center update by expressing his personal opinion on the long-delayed superior court project. “After much study, and after much research, we tried to negotiate permission from Decatur to build our judicial center on our existing parking lots, which was denied.

CrimeStoppers to hit the hardwood for fundraiser

    Adams County CrimeStoppers will host its fourth annual Crime Fighters vs. local radio station K-105 celebrities basketball game at 7 p.m. Feb. 16 in the Bellmont High School gymnasium. Tickets for the event are $4 for adults and $2 for students, with children younger than 5 admitted free.
