Adams County Engineer and newly appointed Highway Department Superintendent Tim Barkey appeared before Adams County Council Tuesday morning to ask their approval of a restructuring of the highway department staff. Councilors, however, were not too keen on Barkey’s desire to create two assistant supervisor positions for the department.
LEO-CEDARVILLE— The Lady Jets ventured to Lions' country at Cedar Creek Golf Course on Tuesday evening to face off against their ACAC rivals and earned third place behind Leo and the visiting Jay County Patriots.
While the Pats are new to the conference, Leo is now in their final year of the ACAC and are looking to leave their mark. The Lions stomped the Jets and Jay County with a 181 team score. The Patriots were second with 216 with Central in third at 259.
Elizabeth J. “Betty” Zerkel, 94, Wakarusa, formerly of Decatur, died Sunday, Aug. 10, 2014, at Miller’s Merry Manor in Wakarusa.
Betty was born Jan. 17, 1920, in Livingston Manor, N.Y., to the late Harry and Pearl (Roosa) Stewart.
She married Hubert Zerkel Jr. Nov. 24, 1943; he survives.
The city of Decatur would like Adams County officials to consider constructing a new superior court building at the corner of 1st and Madison streets rather than on 3rd Street adjacent to the courthouse.
In an effort to entice county officials to select the 1st Street location, Decatur Mayor John Schultz and City Attorney Tim Baker appeared before Adams County Council Tuesday morning and said the city is willing to make up the difference between the acquisition and demolition costs of the two sites.
North Adams Community Schools welcomed 1,746 students through its various doors Tuesday as classes for the 2014-15 school year got under way.
Greeting those students were some three dozen new faces in the teaching ranks — from kindergarten through high school — and a handful of other teachers who have switched roles since school ended in May of this year.

County officials continue to wait for appraisals for the 162-acre Miller property off Winchester Street in Decatur, a site being considered as the location for a new county jail. A similar wait is under way on appraisals on two properties on 3rd Street in Decatur that are being considered for the site of a new superior court complex, Adams County Attorney Mark Burry informed Adams County Commissioners Monday afternoon.
It’s August and for many area governments that means one thing: It’s budget time. The city of Berne is no exception as city council held its first hearing of the 2015 budget Monday evening.
Berne Clerk-Treasurer Gwen Maller laid out the proposed figures for council, reminding the group the figures to this point are only estimates as final numbers from the state are not in yet.
