Dean Arven

January 13, 2011

    Dean Arven, 91, of Logansport, died Wednesday at a hospital in Kokomo.
    Among survivors are two brothers-in-law, Donald H. Harvey of Monroe and Gary Harvey of Decatur, and one sister-in-law, Jane Parker. His wife, the former Dixie Harvey of Adams County, is deceased.
    A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in Gundrum Funeral Home at Logansport, with burial in Rochester. Visiting hours are 4-7 p.m. on Friday.

Alfred W. Schott

    Alfred W. Schott, 83, of Rockford, Ohio, died at 8:24 a.m. Tuesday in Inpatient Hospice Center at Van Wert, Ohio. He was ill only a short time, following an accident at home on January 7, 2011.
    He was born on August 28, 1927, in Mercer County, Ohio, to Frederick W. and Wilhelmina Emerick Schott.
    He married Barbara L. Mathews on March 19, 1946, in Chattanooga, Ohio; she survives.

Sam H. Yager

    Sam H. Yager, 92, a resident of Berne, passed away at 10:05 a.m. on Monday, January 10, 2011, at Swiss Village Retirement Community.
    Sam was born on March 6, 1918, in Adams County, the son of William and Lucinda (Hocker) Yager.
    He married Frieda Myers on June, 6, 1940, and she survives.
    Sam was a member of Bethel Brethren Church in Berne, where he served as a deacon and a trustee.

Lorna M. Bultemeier

    Lorna M. Bultemeier, 84, of Bossier City, Louisiana, died the morning of January 6 in Grace Hospice Home at Shreveport, Louisiana.
    She was born on April 7, 1926, in Cleveland, Ohio, to Edward B. and Mildred Porath Blum.
    She married Erwin C. Bultemeier; he passed away on May 2, 1969.
    She retired in 1992 from the continuing education department at Lutheran Hospital at Fort Wayne and was a former member of St. John Lutheran Church at Bingen.

South Adams jumps into matt poll

    Bellmont moved from ninth in last week's Indianamat.com state wrestling poll to eighth this week, and South Adams entered the poll for the first time at No. 19.
    The Braves' 3-2 showing in the "Main Event" super duals at Bellmont over the weekend helped Bellmont remain in the top 10. The Braves defeated defending state champ and then sixth-rated Mishawaka Saturday, and also knocked off No. 14 Bloomington South, which dropped out of the poll.

DBA announces registration

    The Decatur Baseball Association has announced its registration dates, and all are in February.
    The dates will be Feb. 8, 10, 14 and 16, 6-8 p.m. and Feb. 20, a Sunday evening, 5 to 7 p.m.
    The registration activities will take place at the lower level of the United Steelworkers Union Hall, which is located just north of 2nd St. along the Monmouth Road.

NA to put tax levy on ballot

    Voters in the North Adams school district will be asked in May to approve a general fund referendum tax levy which, if successful, would generate $1.25 million annually for seven years to support the financially-struggling district.

City gets 4.5 inches of snow

    Decatur and Adams County were digging out today from Tuesday's snowstorm, and the good news is that no more snow is likely for the foreseeable future.
    Officials at the Decatur weather station reported a 4 1/2-inch snowfall.
    The National Weather Service said there was a 30 percent chance of further snow here today, and none tonight or Thursday. Chances of snow are pegged at 20 percent Thursday night and through Friday, and at 40 percent for Saturday.

South Adams property sale debate continued

    Discussion continued at Tuesday's meeting of the South Adams Schools Board regarding plans for selling the former Berne elementary school property.
    Acting Superintendent Scott Litwiller noted that the school corporation has hired the surveyor and appraisers necessary to move forward with the process.

Games postponed

Today's snow storm has affected athletic events for tonight, according to officials from both Bellmont and Adams Central High School.
The annual ACAC boys and girls basketball tournament slated for tonight at Adams Central against Bluffton has been postponed until Wednesday night. The boys will play at 6 p.m. and the girls at approximately 7:30 p.m. ACAC tourney games at three other sites, including South Adams at Woodlan, scheduled for tonight have also been delayed until tomorrow.
