No. 11 Mat Braves to open

    Bellmont’s wrestling Braves, rated No. 11 in the preseason Indiana Wrestling Coaches poll, will open their season at Columbia City Tuesday night
in the annual NHC opener. Veteran coach Brent Faurote, beginning his
23rd season at the helm, welcomes back most of his starting lineup after losing just three senior starters through graduation. However, the Braves may start the season without a regular 103-pounder.

Jets, Starfires both land 5 on All-ACAC lst team

    Both Adams Central and South Adams placed five football players on the All-ACAC first team, it was announced earlier this week.
    Outstanding senior back Nathan Busse, who had combined rushing and receiving stats of nearly 1,000 yards and 12 touchdowns, led the Central group, which included sophomore quarterback Dalton Combs, senior center Clayton Lengerich, senior two-way lineman Travis Snyder and runningback-defensive back Spencer Balash.

Daniel L. Boxell

    Daniel L. Boxell, 69, of Decatur, died in Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne on Sunday.
    He was born to Melvin B. and Evelyn P. Boxell.
    Among survivors are his mother and three sons, Ross Boxell of Decatur and DeWayne and Mark Boxell of Nokomis, Florida.
    Funeral services will be held at noon on Friday in Rozelle-Johnson Funeral Home at Anderson, with burial in East Maplewood Cemetery. Visitation is 11 a.m. to noon Friday.

Irene M. Bultemeier

    Irene M. Bultemeier, 88, of Decatur, died at 8:04 a.m. Sunday in Adams Memorial Hospital.    She was born on October 16, 1922, in Adams County to August and Johanna Gallmeyer Buuck.
    She married Clarence H. Bultemeier on May 25, 1941; he passed away on August 17, 2004.
    She assisted her husband in operating Bultemeier Construction in Decatur, as she handled the bookkeeping and payroll duties.

    Funeral arrangements are pending at Haggard and Sefton Funeral Home for Anne M. Gage, 54, of rural Decatur, who died Monday at Adams Memorial Hospital.

Freda J. Mattingly

November 23, 2010

    Freda J. Mattingly, 89, of New Haven, died on Saturday, November 20, 2010, at home.
    Born in Henry County, Ohio, she was the daughter of Harry and Bessie Graham Hitt.   
     She is survived by her children, Marjean (Kenneth) Hormann of Wolcottville; Noreen (Gary) Provo of Logansport; Lawrence J. Mattingly, Jr. of Angola; and Kent (fiance, Mia Bayron) Mattingly of Fort Wayne; 13 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren.

Fire destroys part of building

    An addition to a business building on Patterson St. in Industrial Park was demolished as firefighters extinguished a blaze late Sunday night.
    However, the two businesses located in the main portion of the building — Sportsman's Lodge and Haugk Companies — are operating as usual, with no damage, Decatur Assistant Fire Chief Jim Hitchcock said this morning.

Two more arrests in holdup

    In what could be considered the "last hurrah" for Decatur Police Department Detective Eric "Keebie" Meyer, two men wanted in connection with the armed robbery on November 10 at the S.M.O.K.E.S. Tobacco Shop were apprehended in Fort Wayne on Monday.

South throttles Bellmont 71-51

    South Side took advantage of a weary Bellmont squad, playing its third game in four days, with an aggressive full court press and squeezed out a 71-51 verdict at the Archers' gym..
    Despite the 20-point loss, which snapped a two-game Bellmont winning streak, Coach Tory Fuelling was pleased with the fight that his club put up. South's press resulted in 20 first-half turnovers, but the Squaws cut that in half in the second half.

Patriots’ swimmers defeat Central girls

    PORTLAND—Jay County sank Adams Central, 221-80, in girls' varsity swimming on Monday.
    One-meter diving—(1) Megan Taylor (JC), 182.2. AC's Alisen Barger was third at 126.8.
    200-yard medley relay—(1) JC, 2:01.54 (Charlotte Becot, Eme Miller, Mary Hudson, Caitlin Mark). AC was third, fourth, and fifth. The third-place team included YuLeeza McCullough, Ali McClain, Whitney Landis, and Barger.
