United Way finds way to meeting its goal

The 2010-11 goal of the United Way of Adams County (UWAC) will be met soon.
    That good news was imparted to approximately 40 people at a UWAC celebration event held Wednesday at the South Adams Senior Center in Berne by Ron Storey, president of the United Way board of directors.
    Storey, who once headed the United Way in Burlington, Iowa, said any United Way drive cannot succeed "without the many volunteers who get out and do solicitation and, most of all, the people who are so giving to the United Way."

Adams County 15th healthiest in state

    Adams is the 15th healthiest county in Indiana, according to a report compiled by the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. The report, released Wednesday by the Indiana State Department of Health, used a series of statistics as well as individual responses to a series of survey questions to determine the health ranking of all 92 Indiana counties.

Chevy to sponsor DBA leagues this year

    The Chevy Youth Baseball program has included the Decatur Baseball Association this year.
    Chevy and through Courtesy Motors of Decatur is sponsoring the Decatur Baseball leagues this year, providing equipment bags and containers, T-shirts, and bat racks for the dugouts.

People must be registered for NA vote

    To vote in the upcoming North Adams Schools referendum, a person must be registered to vote, Adams County Clerk Gayla Reinhart said Tuesday.
    Midnight next Monday is the deadline to register. For information, call the county clerk's office.
    There has been some speculation that anyone residing with the North Adams district is eligible. To cast a vote, however, a person must live within the district and be a registered voter.

New insurance plan for county employees OKed

    Adams County Auditor Bill Borne informed the county commissioners at their meeting on Monday that a new COBRA insurance plan for county employees has been approved.
    So, too, has a retirement plan that, according to the Benicomp firm in Fort Wayne, would be utilized from age 62 for early retirement to age 65 [or when a person qualifies for Social Security and Medicare] or the COBRA coverage.

    A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. this Saturday at Haggard-Sefton and Hirschy Funeral Home in Decatur for Kevin “Alan” Brantly, 52, of Decatur, who died on January 4.
    Visitation will be from 12:30-1 p.m. in the funeral home.
    He is survived by his wife, Laura, and three daughters, Mrs. Scott (Tara) Watkins of Florence, Mississippi; Mrs. Daniel (Kelly) Walker of Decatur; and Mrs. Doug (Vicky) Jackson of Monroe.

Clifford K. Norman

    Clifford K. Norman, 74, of Portland, died Monday in Jay County Hospital.
    He was born to Marlon C. and Susie Denman Norman.
    Among survivors are his wife, Lois; two sons, Rick Norman of Decatur and Steve Norman of Albany; and three daughters, Mrs. Danna (Peggy) Noggler of Fort Recovery, Ohio; Mrs. Dennis (Patty) Linn of Portland; and Mrs. Shane (Pam) Penticuff of Ridgeville, Indiana.

A crew of men from the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) was at work on Monday along US 27 north of Decatur cleaning debris from roadside cracks with a high-pressure blower, then filling the cracks with a black tar-like substance. The busy highway's northbound side was down to just one lane where the work was under way. INDOT officials said traffic will be restricted through mid-August for concrete patching. Motorists are urged to slow down and stay alert for traffic changes in the area. Officials said no detours are anticipated.

Fiber optics line OK sought

    A presentation was made to the Adams County Commissioners on Monday on a multi-use fiber-optic communications line that's being proposed to run through the county from Jay County up to Fort Wayne.
    The commissioners will vote soon on whether to approve the plans of Community Fiber Solutions (CFS), a firm founded in Ohio last October and registered for operation in Indiana in November. The firm provides telephone, television, and Internet access.
